MILFORD, Ct. -
Bowling Green men's basketball standout Anthony Stacey was selected in the United States Basketball League Draft Tuesday afternoon (April 11). Stacey was chosen in the fourth round (39th pick overall) by the USBL's Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs.
The ValleyDawgs play home games in Lehigh University's Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. The team's season begins April 21 and runs through June 25, with single-elimination playoffs to follow.
The ValleyDawgs are coached by former NBA standout Darryl Dawkins.
A total of 88 players were taken by the USBL's 11 teams in the eight-round draft. The USBL's league members are the Atlantic City Seagulls, Brooklyn Kings, Dodge City Legend, Florida Sea Dragons, Gulf Coast SunDogs, Kansas Cagerz, Long Island Surf, New Jersey Shorecats, Oklahoma Storm, Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs and Washington Congressionals.
According to the league's website (www.usbl.com), the USBL has sent 125 players on to the NBA in its 15-year history, including Muggsy Bogues, Chris Childs, Charlie Ward, Adrian Griffin, Anthony Mason, Avery Johnson, Mario Elie and Darrell Armstrong.
Although there are other publicly traded sports teams such as the Boston Celtics (NYSE: BOS) and Ascent Entertainment (NASDAQ: GOAL) owners of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche, the USBL is the first and only publicly traded Sports League allowing fans to become owners (OTCBB: USBL).
Stacey, Bowling Green's all-time leader in both scoring and steals, helped the Falcons to a 22-8 overall record and a Mid-American Conference championship. The Brown and Orange went 14-4 in conference play and advanced to the NIT.
