DAYTON, Ohio - Host Dayton pushed a run across in the seventh inning for a 1-0 win over Bowling Green in softball action Thursday (April 13) afternoon. The non-conference game was held at UD's Stuart Field.
BG sophomore pitcher Jessie Milosek suffered the loss despite throwing a complete-game four-hitter. Milosek struck out three batters and walked just one. She did, however, hit three batters with pitches, and the final HBP came back to haunt her.
Milosek hit the leadoff batter, UD's Erin O'Shea, in the home half of the seventh. The next batter, Jennifer Hart, attempted to bunt O'Shea to second, but BG third baseman Lynsey Ebel cut down O'Shea at second base. Joy Christopher, however, did successfully bunt Hart to second. Ebel fielded the ball and had just one play, at first base. The next batter, Tanya Leet, lined a single to center field, and Carmen Hitterdal's throw to the plate was not in time to cut down Hart.
The Falcons had just four hits of their own on the day, and advanced a runner as far as second base only three times all game.
Prior to the decisive seventh inning, the best UD scoring chance came in the third. In that frame, Milosek loaded the bases on two hit batters sandwiched around a Leet single. Leet entered the game batting a UD-best .427 on the season. But, Milosek worked out of the bases-loaded, none-out jam, inducing the next two batters to hit infield grounders which led to force-outs at the plate. She then got UD's Sara Hatcher to fly out.
Hatcher picked up the win for the Flyers, scattering four hits and striking out six. She did not issue a walk in improving her season record to 16-4.
Dayton won for the seventh consecutive game, and the 16th time in the last 17 outings, to move to 25-16 on the year. BGSU dropped to 17-10.
The Falcons, 2-2 in Mid-American Conference play, look to move up in the league standings with a three-game home series vs. Akron this weekend. BGSU will host the Zips in a 3:00 p.m. single game Friday (April 14), and the teams will play a 1:00 p.m. twinbill Saturday (April 15).
