BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green men's tennis team rallied from a deficit to record a 4-3 victory over defending Mid-American Conference champion Western Michigan Saturday (April 15). The dual match was held at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
The visiting Broncos (12-8 overall, 4-1 MAC), coached by former BGSU mentor Dave Morin, captured the doubles point by winning at all three flights. WMU's Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson downed the Falcons' top-flight duo of junior Brandon Gabel and sophomore Vitek Wild by an 8-6 score, while BG's second tandem of freshman Geoff Hiscox and sophomore Ed Kuresman lost to their WMU foes by the same score.
In singles play, however, the Brown and Orange won at each of the top four flights. Freshman Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo topped Pillon at the top flight, while Wild bested Fernando Garcia at the second level. Hiscox beat Christian Brattstrom at the third level, and sophomore Mike Kossoff posted a win over Tomlinson at the #4 flight. All four of those victories came in straight sets.
WMU's Jeff Brink did not lose a game in his sixth-flight win over Gabel, while the Broncos' Kyle Gernhofer beat Kuresman at the fifth flight. The two players, after splitting the first two sets, played a "super tiebreaker" in the third set, since the outcome of the overall match had already been decided.
The Falcons, now 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the MAC, have a shot at a league regular-season co-championship. Heading into the final weekend, BGSU and WMU are chasing first-place Ball State (5-0). The Cardinals and Broncos meet in Kalamazoo next Saturday (April 22). If Western Michigan knocks off BSU, the Falcons could create a three-way tie at the top by defeating Eastern Michigan (April 21) and Toledo (April 22). Both of BG's remaining matches are on the road. The MAC Tournament is April 27-29 in Toledo.
BGSU's win over WMU gave the Falcons one more win than in all of last season. The 1998-99 edition of the Falcons went 12-13 overall. That team recorded a 4-3 MAC record.
