BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore Jessie Milosek threw a complete-game four-hitter, and freshman Libby Voshell drove in three runs as the Bowling Green softball team downed visiting Akron Saturday afternoon (April 15). The game, the first half of a doubleheader, was played at the BGSU Softball Field.
Milosek gave up two runs and three hits in the first inning, then surrendered only one hit the rest of the way. In fact, over the final six innings, she faced 21 batters, just three over the minimum. Two batters reached on BG errors during that span.
Milosek struck out a career-high seven batters, walking just one. She retired 10 of the last 11 hitters of the game (the only UA to reach base during that span did so on an error), and set down the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.
At the plate, seven different Falcons had one hit apiece, but freshman shortstop Libby Voshell led the way with three runs batted in. Voshell, a high-school teammate of Milosek at Brighton, Mich., had a fielder's choice in the second inning, scoring junior Nikki Rouhana with BG's first run of the game. Then, in the fifth inning, she added some insurance runs for Milosek, building upon a 5-2 Falcon lead with a two-out, two run single that scored junior Morgan LaNicca and senior Erin Zwinck.
The Zips broke on top with the two first-inning runs. The big blow was an RBI triple by Tracee McCoy, who later scored on a Rianne Hess single.
BG cut the lead in half on Voshell's RBI FC in the second, then scored three times in the third. In that inning, senior Carmen Hitterdal reached on a one-out error, then stole second and scored on a single by classmate Colleen Bates. Bates took second on a single by sophomore Renee Rosemeier, and Zwinck was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Rouhana. Rouhana drew a walk off UA starter Sherell Watson, giving BG the lead for good, and Rosemeier scored on a sacrifice fly by Jen Domschot.
In the fourth, the Falcons scored another run, without the benefit of a hit. Angie Domschot drew a one-out walk off UA reliever Tiffany McCoy, and Hitterdal's sacrifice bunt was misplayed by McCoy, putting runners on first and second. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and a second WP scored Domschot. Voshell's two-run single completed the scoring in the fifth.
The win moved Milosek's record to 7-3 on the year, and improved her seasonal earned-run average to 1.14. She has now compiled eight complete games in her nine starts.
Watson took the loss for UA, dropping to 5-2 on the year.
The teams returned to the field for a second game Saturday.
