BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green softball team scored four times in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 5-3 victory over visiting Akron Saturday (April 15). The game, played at the BGSU Softball Field, gave the Falcons a sweep of the day's Mid-American Conference doubleheader.
BGSU (19-11 overall, 4-3 MAC) broke on top with a second-inning run. Senior Erin Zwinck reached on a throwing error by UA pitcher Lisa Keenan, advancing to second base when Keenan's lob sailed over the head of the first baseman. Zwinck took third on a passed ball, then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Nikki Rouhana.
The Zips (17-13, 3-3) knotted the score in the third inning off BG starter McKenna Houle. The Falcon freshman gave up a one-out double to UA's Tracee McCoy, who took third on a groundout. Rianne Hess delivered a two-out single to plate McCoy. But, the Falcons would bat around in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
In that inning, sophomore Holly Frantz led off with a single, one of her two hits in the game. She took second on a sac bunt by Angie Domschot, and advanced to third on another UA passed ball. From third, Frantz scored on a single by senior Carmen Hitterdal. Then, senior Colleen Bates reached on a Zip error, with Hitterdal moving to third. Bates stole second, and Hitterdal scored on a single by sophomore Renee Rosemeier, with Bates taking third. A Zwinck single scored Bates, and a Rouhana double plated Rosemeier. BG bunched five of the team's eight hits in the game into that third inning.
Akron got two runs back in the fourth, all after Houle had retired the first two batters. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases, and UA's Tracee McCoy hit a fly ball down the right-field line that Frantz misplayed for a two-base error. The Zips would get no closer, however, as Houle retired the next batter, then allowed just one hit over the final three innings.
Houle, who retired 10 of the last 12 batters, improved her record to 6-4 and her ERA to 1.10 with the win. She threw a complete-game six-hitter, allowing just one earned run. Frantz, the number-nine hitter in the BG lineup, was the only Falcon with multiple hits. Rouhana had two RBI.
For the Zips, the ninth batter in the order also had two hits, as Angie Hill went 2-for-2 with a walk. Keenan took the loss to drop to 8-10. Just two of the five runs she surrendered were earned.
The Falcons will return to action with a Tuesday (April 18) MAC doubleheader vs. Miami. Game one will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
Additionally, the Brown and Orange has rescheduled the game against the University of Michigan. The teams will play a single game in Ann Arbor on Wednesday (April 19), beginning at 3:00 p.m.
