TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green men's tennis team recorded a 6-1 road win over arch-rival Toledo Saturday (April 22), in the process earning a share of the Mid-American Conference regular-season crown.
The Falcons, by virtue of the win over the Rockets and a Western Michigan win over Ball State Saturday, finish the regular season tied with both BSU and WMU. All three teams end MAC play with 5-1 league records.
The Falcons will open play in the MAC Championships on Thursday (April 27). The league tourney, hosted by Toledo, runs through Saturday (April 29).
The MAC title is the first of any kind by the men's tennis program since the 1964 team tied with Miami for the league title. That Falcon squad, coached by Bob Keefe, went 15-0 in dual-match play.
In Saturday's Toledo match, the Falcons won at the top five singles flights. Sophomore Vitek Wild won a straight-sets decision over UT's Jorge Morales at the #1 flight, while freshman Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo downed the Rockets' Gernot Kerschbaumer in three sets at the second level. Freshman Geoff Hiscox, sophomore Mike Kossoff and frosh Micael Lopez-Acevedo were winners at flights three through five, respectively.
Ed Kuresman suffered a three-set loss to UT's Dipesh Rao at the sixth flight. Each of the first two sets needed marathon tiebreakers before concluding.
The Brown and Orange swept the three doubles flights, with Wild and junior Brandon Gabel winning in a tiebreaker at the top level, the Hiscox/Kuresman duo emerging victorious at the second flight, and the team of Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and fellow freshman Peter Gardonyi capturing a win at the third flight.
The Falcons conclude the regular season with a 15-7 overall dual-match record and a 5-1 MAC mark. UT drops to 8-12 and 3-3, respectively.
