Oxford, OH -
A bases-loaded hit batter scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and Miami held on for a 4-3 win over the Bowling Green softball team. The game, the first half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at RedHawk Diamond in Oxford, Ohio, on Tuesday (April 25).
Miami scored twice in the opening inning on an RBI double by Nicki Pelfrey and a run-scoring single by Kristina Mortaloni. It looked like BG starting pitcher Jessie Milosek had gotten out of the inning with just one RedHawk run scoring, but Mortaloni's hit, a pop-up with two outs, fell to the ground after BGSU second baseman Angie Domschot lost the ball in the sun.
The Falcons tied the score in the third. After junior Lynsey Ebel and freshman Libby Voshell had back-to-back singles, junior Jen Domschot hit a triple to dead centerfield to score both runners.
BGSU took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth when senior Erin Zwinck's one-out single scored classmate Colleen Bates. Bates had reached on an error to lead off the inning, then took second on a sacrifice bunt by the team's third senior, Carmen Hitterdal.
But, the RedHawks scored twice in their half of the sixth. Mortaloni had a leadoff double and took third base on an Erin Taylor single. One out later, Jody Kermode's single scored Mortaloni to tie the game. Amy Dudley singled to load the bases, but Milosek induced Keri Brisnehan to hit a grounder to third base and Ebel's throw to Bates cut down Taylor at the plate for the second out.
With two outs and the bases loaded, however, Miami pinch-hitter Laura Fulton was hit by a pitch to score Kermode with the game-winning run. The Falcons could get only a two-out Angie Domschot walk in the seventh inning.
MU's Abbey Arnold threw a complete-game six-hitter for the win. Milosek took the loss for the Falcons, despite throwing her 11th complete game in 12 starts this season. The sophomore gave up 10 hits in dropping to 9-4.
