Baseball Plays Five Of Six Games On Road This Week

FALCON BASEBALL STARTS MAC SEASON 3-1
The Bowling Green State University baseball team, winners of three of four games this past weekend, will play two non-league games this week -- Tuesday at Wright State (3 p.m.), Wednesday at home vs. Detroit (3 p.m.) -- before returning to the road for four Mid-American Conferences games this weekend.
The Falcons will play a doubleheader at Western Michigan on Saturday, April 8, before visiting Central Michigan for a twinbill on Sunday, April 9. First pitch both days is slated for 1 p.m.
UPCOMING GAMES ...
Bowling Green returns home for an April 11th game against Cleveland State. The next day the Brown and Orange plays at Notre Dame (5 p.m.)
The Falcons will face their first MAC East Division opponent when Marshall comes to Steller Field for a four-game series on Apr. 15-16. Doubleheader action both days begins at 1 p.m.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEK ...
Mar. 28 -- Oakland 11, BGSU 8
Bowling Green had its three-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-8 loss to Oakland University on Tuesday.
BG led 2-0 after three innings and rallied from a 5-3 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning, but the Golden Grizzlies scored three times each in the seventh and eighth innings for the victory.
The Falcons scored in the second on a led off triple by Lee Morrison and an RBI groundout by Corey Loomis. BG added its second run the next inning when Nick Elrod led off with a double and scored on a Len Elias single.
BG's fourth inning run came when Lee Morrison led off with a walk and came around to score on back-to-back singles by Kenny Burdine and Brad Simon.
Bowling Green scored four times in the fifth. Aric Christman doubled and a walk to Alan Gilhousen preceded Sean Ryan reaching on a strikeout with a passed ball. Also included in that play was two runners scoring. Lee Morrison singled in one run and Kenny Burdine doubled in another.
BG's final run came when Corey Loomis reached on a fielder's choice and scored as Brad Simon, Nick Elrod and Aric Christman all walked in succession.
Tony Fontana started for BG and allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings, while striking out six. Brad Henry pitched 2.2 innings and allowed three runs (all earned). Mike Muzi hurled 1.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned), while Chad Curlis pitched the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit.
Mar. 29 -- Michigan 6, BGSU 2
Bowling Green suffered a 6-2 setback at Michigan on Wednesday.
The Wolverines scored four times in the first inning against BG starter Joe Cheney. Jordan Cantalamessa began the inning with a double and scored two batters later on a Falcon error. Rob Bobeda tripled in Michigan's second run and scored on an RBI single by Jeff Trzos. UM's final run of the inning came on an RBI groundout.
BG scored its first run in the fifth inning when Nick Elrod doubled in Kenny Burdine with two outs. The Falcons other run came the next inning when Aric Christman led off with a double and came around to score on back-to-back infield groundouts by Len Elias and Alan Gilhousen.
Nick Elrod tied a BGSU record with three doubles in the contest, while Lee Morrison chipped in with three singles.
Joe Cheney pitched the first three innings and allowed five runs (three earned). Deryck Griffith hurled the next three innings allowing one earned run. Craig Menke and Ryan Streb each tossed a scoreless inning.
April 1 -- BGSU 5, Toledo 0 (Game 1)
Bowling Green started its "second" season with a 5-0 triumph over Toledo in the MAC opener for both teams.
Falcon junior Tony Fontana limited the Rockets to three hits and three walks, while striking out seven in his third complete game of the campaign. Only one Toledo baserunner was able to reach third and he was stranded when Fontana retired the final two batters in the fourth inning.
BG scored twice in the second inning as Aric Christman's two-out two-run single through the right side scored Lee Morrison and Brad Simon. The Falcons added a single run in the fourth when Morrison reached on an error and scored on Nick Elrod's sacrifice fly.
Bowling Green added two more runs in the sixth when Corey Loomis led off with a double and scored on a UT error. Elrod's second sacrifice fly of the contest plated Morrison.
April 1 -- BGSU 9, Toledo 6 (Game 2)
Bowling Green completed its doubleheader sweep of Toledo with a 9-6 victory.
The Falcons scored twice in the first inning after the first two batters were retired. Alan Gilhousen was hit by a pitch and Lee Morrison walked and both runners scored on Len Elias' double to left center.
Matt Best smacked his first home run of the year leading off the second inning. BG added four more in the fourth. With one out, Brad Simon was hit by a pitch and following a strike out, Aric Christman and Kenny Burdine both had infield singles to load the bases. Alan Gilhousen followed with a two-run single to center, and Burdine scored on a Toledo error. Lee Morrison followed with an RBI single to center scoring Gilhousen.
BG scored two more in the sixth inning when Christman and Burdine had back-to-back bunt singles. After a strike out, Christman scored on a fielder's choice with an error, while Burdine scored later in the inning during a run down.
Doug Flere started for BG and allowed three earned runs in 2.1 innings. Deryck Griffith pitched 0.2 inning and allowed one earned run. Mike Muzi allowed two earned runs in 2.1 innings, while Ryan Streb retired all five Rocket batters he faced for his team-leading third save of the year.
April 2 -- Eastern Michigan 7, BGSU 6 (Game 1)
Eastern Michigan dealt BG its first conference loss by scoring four times in the seventh inning for a 7-6 win.
The Falcons scored in the second when Alan Gilhousen and Sean Ryan had back-to-back singles and were sacrificed by Lee Morrison. Gilhousen scored when Matt Marcum's grounder was misplayed.
BG scored five times in the fourth inning as Gilhousen tripled leading off the inning and scored on Ryan's double. After the next two batters were retired, Nick Elrod walked and Corey Loomis' infield hit plated Ryan. Aric Christman singled in Elrod, and Kenny Burdine tripled in Loomis and Christman.
Joe Cheney went 6.1 innings for BG and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out seven. Ryan Streb pitched the final 2/3 of an inning and surrendered three earned runs.
April 2 -- BGSU 5, Eastern Michigan 4 (Game 2)
Bowling Green held on for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap scoring all its runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Falcons erased a 2-0 Eagle lead with three runs in the fourth. Len Elias drew a one-out walk and Alan Gilhousen reached on a error. Sean Ryan singled in Elias, while Matt Marcum's infield single plated Gilhousen. Ryan crossed the plate on Lee Morrison's fielder's choice.
BG's last two runs came on RBI singles by Kenny Burdine and Alan Gilhousen.
Falcon starting pitcher Craig Menke struck out a career-high 12 batters and allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits in 6.1 innings. Brad Henry and Chad Curlis each retired the lone batter they faced.
FALCON NOTES ...
Junior outfielder Aric Christman and senior second baseman Kenny Burdine lead the squad with nine multiple-hit games each, while senior designated hitter Alan Gilhousen has a team-high five multiple-RBI games.
Gilhousen has the longest hitting streak at 10 games, while Christman has the longest active hitting streak at six games.
Junior right-hand pitcher Craig Menke recorded a 2000 team-high 12 strikeouts versus EMU.
Junior right-hand pitcher Tony Fontana tossed a three-hit shutout in the Falcons MAC opener against Toledo on Saturday. In his first conference game in 1999, Fontana hurled a three-hit shutout at Toledo on April 4.
