The Phoenix Coyotes named Marc Potvin the new head coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons.
Potvin played four years at Bowling Green (1986-90) recording 127 points on 62 goals and 65 assists with 289 penalty minutes in 174 games.
"Marc's knowledge of the game, communications skills and enthusiasm will enhance the development of our prospects and the on-ice success of the Springfield Falcons," said Coyotes General Manager Bobby Smith in a written statement.
Last season, Potvin served as head coach and director of hockey operations for the Mississippi Sea Wolves of the East Coast Hockey League. He led the Sea Wolves to 35-27-8 regular season mark and a first round playoff victory over Pensacola. Mississippi lost in the second round to eventual Kelly Cup finalist Louisiana.
The 33-year-old began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Adirondack Red Wings during the 1998-99 season. "I am very excited about the opportunity to work for the Springfield Falcons," said Potvin. "I am thrilled to work in the Coyotes organization and look forward to the challenge and responsibility of developing the Coyotes' top prospects."
Potvin played part of six seasons in the NHL with Detroit (1990-92), Los Angeles (1993), Hartford (1993-94) and Boston (1994-96). His NHL totals include three goals and five assists in 121 games with 456 penalty minutes. He also played professionally with the Adirondack Red Wings (1989-93), Providence Bruins (1994-96), Portland Pirates (1996-97) and Chicago Wolves (1997-98). He helped the Wolves to the 1998 Turner Cup Championship.
