BOWLING GREEN, OH -
Bowling Green State University Athletics Director Paul Krebs has hired J.D. Campbell as the Director of Athletic Communications. Campbell, 36, comes to BGSU after serving as the Director of University Public Affairs and Marketing at Emporia State University (Emporia, KS) the last year. Prior to being elevated to his current position, Campbell spent nearly six years as the Sports Information Director at ESU.
A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Campbell received his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Kansas Newman College in 1986, and his Master of Education in Sports Administration from Xavier University in 1994.
"I'm very excited to have this opportunity," said Campbell. "BGSU is well-respected, has a great tradition in intercollegiate athletics and the community of Bowling Green is an extremely desirable place to raise a family."
As Director of Public Affairs and Marketing at ESU, Campbell oversaw marketing, licensing, media relations, sports information, photography, graphic design, and printing services. Campbell began his SID duties at Emporia State in December of 1993 and was responsible for publicity, marketing, advertising sales and promotion of a 12-sport NCAA Division II athletic program.
During his tenure at ESU, he served as host media coordinator at four NCAA Championship events, and increased advertising and marketing related income 300 percent. Campbell also developed a marketing plan which doubled season ticket base in one season as well as developing a group ticket plan.
He has been honored 16 times by the College Sports Information Directors of America for publications excellence, including four "Best in the Nation" citations. In 1998, Campbell was presented the Extra Mile Award from the Harlon Hill Committee for bringing distinguished attention to the award and NCAA Division II football through his promotion of Brian Shay, who finished as the all-time leading rusher in college football history.
Campbell began his professional career as the Sports Information Director at Johnson County Community College from 1986-89 and was sports information and promotions coordinator at Northern Kentucky University from 1989-93.
"We are very excited to have J.D. on staff. He brings tremendous experience, enthusiasm and passion for what he does. I think he will quickly earn the respect of everyone he comes into contact with from media members to our own coaches," said Kristin Bernert, assistant athletic director and search committee chair.
Campbell and his wife, Kerri, are the parents of two boys, Jon (7) and Chris (4).
