Baseball Honors 2000 Squad

The Bowling Green State University baseball squad held its annual awards banquet this past weekend.
Current senior outfielders Aric Christman (Leipsic, Ohio) and Lee Morrison (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) shared Most Valuable Player honors. Christman was the only Falcon to play in all 54 games in 2000 and hit .337 with a team-best 10 stolen bases. Morrison hit .362 with a team-best 46 RBI.
Tony Fontana (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) earned BGSU's Most Valuable Pitcher award. Fontana compiled an 8-3 record with a 2.69 earned-run average. He was drafted in the seventh round of last June's Major League Baseball draft by the Boston Red Sox and spent the summer with the Lowell Spinners, Boston's NY-Penn League affiliate.
Brett Baumgartner (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) was named Freshman of the Year/Don Woods Award after recording a 3-2 mark in 29.2 innings.
Matt Best (Lima, Ohio/Bath) was selected as Mr. Falcon (Most Versatile)/Ken Schoeni Award winner. Best hit .355 in 39 games last year with a .482 slugging percentage.
Pitcher Craig Menke (Delphos, Ohio/Fort Jennings) was named BGSU's Most Improved Player for 2000. Menke had a 5-3 record with a 5.28 earned-run average with 45 strikeouts in 58 innings.
Christman won the Golden Glove Award for the second straight season, while Scott Dukate (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) won the Scholar-Athlete Award. Morrison was the 2000 recipient of the Aaron Lawniczak/Mr. Hustle Award.
Graduated seniors Alan Gilhousen (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and Kenny Burdine (Fairfield, Ohio) shared the Coaches Award.
In addition, Fontana received his first-team All-MAC and first-team All-Mideast awards, while Gilhousen received his second-team All-MAC (as a designated hitter) award.
The 2001 Falcon Baseball season begins the weekend of March 3-4 with a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky.
