Kent, Ohio - Freshman cornerback Janssen Patton tied a school record with three interceptions, including a 74-yard touchdown in the second quarter, to lead BGSU to an 18-11 victory at Kent State. Patton's two other interceptions, both in the fourth quarter, killed Golden Flash drives deep in Falcon territory. His three picks tied a school mark shared by several, most recently Carlos Brooks who equaled the feat in 1992.
BGSU got on the board first with a career-long 40-yard field goal by Mike Knapp at 12:06 of the third quarter. Patton's TD pick, the third longest such play in school history, gave the Falcons a 9-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Following a KSU field goal, the Falcons went into intermission with a 12-3 lead on a 24-yard FG by Knapp.
Following a scoreless third quarter, sophomore quarterback Andy Sahm scrambled for a career-long 45-yard TD run giving BGSU an 18-3 with 13:58 remaining in the game.
However, the Golden Flashes, who outgained BGSU 323-235, came to life following a 21-yard fumble recovery for a score by Nashville Dyer with 10:13 remaining. Patton then picked off his third pass in the end zone after KSU had driven 59-yards to the BGSU five-yard line.
On offense, junior John Gibson rushed for a career-high 82 yards to lead the Falcons. Junior David Bautista had six catches for 78 yards and Sahm completed nine passes for 111 yards.
The BGSU defense has allowed just one TD in the last six quarters and held KSU to just 38 yards in 32 carries rushing. The Falcons will host Akron next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. Homecoming contest.
