DETROIT, Mich. - Three players had two goals apiece as the University of Detroit Mercy defeated the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team by a 6-3 margin Wednesday (Sept. 6) afternoon at the Titan Soccer Field.
Junior Gwen Kilfoy and sophomores Tanya Tiselj and Stacey Westbrook each found the back of the net twice as the Titans (2-3-0) knocked the visiting Falcons from the ranks of the unbeaten. BGSU is now 2-1-0 on the season.
The Falcons fell behind early, as Tiselj went in all alone and beat BGSU sophomore goalie Erika Flanders at the 2:54 mark. Flanders came up big roughly 15 minutes into the contest, stopping Tiselj at point-blank range on another breakaway attempt.
The Brown and Orange tied the score at 22:04, when senior Ashley Enser scored from a difficult angle. After taking a pass from classmate Janice Mentrup, Enser played a ball from the right side that eluded UDM 'keeper Erika Rust, hit the far post and bounced in. Along with Mentrup, junior Mandy Smith also drew an assist on the play.
With just under seven minutes remaining in the first half, Kilfoy took a Westbrook feed and scored to give the Titans the lead once again. But, just 1:02 later, sophomore Jill Conover tied the score. Ashley Enser played a through ball to Mentrup on the right side, and Mentrup's short cross found Conover, who redirected it past Rust for her second goal on the young season.
Just before the half, however, the Titans took the lead for good. A Falcon defender was called for tripping in the BG penalty box, and Westbrook's penalty kick found twine with just two seconds left in the stanza.
Kilfoy scored again nearly seven minutes into the second half, and Tiselj's goal at the 72:51 mark gave UDM a 5-2 lead. Tiselj scored when her corner kick curved into the net. Westbrook completed the scoring for the host team with 5:36 remaining.
Redshirt sophomore Tracy Gleixner, playing for the first time since the 1998 season, scored with exactly one minute remaining. Junior Beth Wechsler and freshman Sara Leary assisted, with Leary scoring her first collegiate point on the play.
The match marked the third time in as many years that the Titans scored six goals against the Falcons. UDM beat the visiting Brown and Orange, 6-4, in 1998 before blanking the Falcons in BG by a 6-0 count last year.
"Despite the outcome, we had a few positives in the match," said first-year BGSU coach Andy Richards. "We came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, and showed tremendous character to get back to a tie score in a game that was very frenetic and chaotic.
"Also, we scored three goals away from home, including the first goals of the season for Ashley Enser and Tracy Gleixner. But, as a team, we have got to keep things a little more simple and in perspective. We need to stay positive within ourselves."
Kilfoy has scored nine goals in the three meetings between the teams. For her part, BG's Gleixner has scored four times against the Titans, having played in just two of the matches.
Both Flanders and Rust made two saves in the match. Each team substituted goalies in the late going, with BGSU freshman Ashley Beel seeing her first collegiate action.
The Titans held a 14-9 edge in the shots department, and an 8-6 margin in shots on goal.
Along with Beel and Gleixner, BGSU's Lindsay Enser, Amy McIlwain and Stephanie Heller saw their first action of the season. Heller, a senior, missed the first two matches of the year due to injury. For Lindsay Enser, a freshman, the UDM match marked her first collegiate appearance on the pitch.
"(UDM) was a mentally tougher team today," said Richards, "and their finishing was of the highest quality. It seemed like everything they hit went in.
"The question for our team is this: can we bounce back and let (the loss) become a blip, rather than a trend? If so, than perhaps this was a good lesson for us to learn today."
The Falcons will head to Las Vegas, Nev., for a pair of matches. After taking on the University of Idaho in a neutral-site match Saturday (Sept. 9), the Brown and Orange will face host UNLV Monday night (Sept. 11). Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. Eastern Time).
