Volleyball Downs Host UCF In Five-Game Thriller

ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Caty Rommeck and senior JoAnna Papageorgiou combined for 36 kills as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team posted a five-game victory over the host University of Central Florida Friday night (Sept. 8). The Falcons downed the Golden Knights (8-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-7, 16-14) in the team's second of three matches at the UCF Fall Invitational at UCF Arena.
BGSU, now 3-2 on the year and 2-0 in the tourney, twice rallied from a game down to beat the host school. The Falcons fell in both the first and third games by identical 15-8 scores, but rallied both times to win the next game, before capturing the decisive fifth game.
In addition to her team-high 19 kills, Rommeck recorded a .347 hitting percentage and a total of eight blocks. Rommeck had a whopping six solo blocks, just one off the BGSU record for a five-game match.
Papageorgiou had 17 kills and hit .317, and she added 16 digs and three blocks. Freshman Susie Norris had a team-best 21 digs to top six Falcons in double digits in that category.
Another freshman, Sara Sikorski, had 42 assists and 14 digs, while classmate Nadia Bedricky had 18 digs. The Falcons had an even 100 digs as a team, with Rommeck and junior Karen Tangeman each notching 13. Tangeman had a career-high and match-high five service aces.
Piper Morgan had 19 kills to lead the hosts, who fall to 1-3 with the loss. Morgan added a match-high 10 total blocks.
The Falcons, winners of three consecutive matches after an 0-2 start to the season, will attempt to capture the tournament title outright. BGSU completes action at the UCF Fall Invitational by taking on Florida International University in a Saturday morning (Sept. 9) match. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
