THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team sets to begin both the 2001 calendar year and the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule. The Brown and Orange will host the University of Akron at venerable Anderson Arena (5,000) on Wed., Jan. 3, 2001. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Following the UA game, the Falcons will head to Athens to take on Ohio University Saturday (Jan. 6). That game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at "The Convo" (13,168).
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 28-38. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 210-157 (.572). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 4-7 record on the season, and completed non-conference play with Thursday's (Dec. 28, 2000) 68-48 loss at UW-Milwaukee. Prior to that game, the Falcons posted a 56-52 road win over Wright State (Dec. 16).
That Wright State game marked the fifth consecutive contest in which the team played without three starters, all of whom were injured. Two of those starters returned to active duty at UWM.
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.5 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, was injured in the UDM game and missed the next five games. She made her return at UWM, scoring a team-high 11 points off the bench.
Senior Angie Farmer is second on the team with 9.5 points per outing. Farmer, like Miller, also missed five-straight games due to injury. She played just four minutes at Milwaukee, but scored six points on 2-of-3 shooting from three-point land.
Senior Afra Smith has moved into third place on the team with 8.8 points per game, and has hit double digits in each of the last three contests.
Junior Dana Western is fourth in scoring, with 8.5 points per contest, while sophomore Kim Griech is close behind with 8.3 ppg. Griech and Western picked up the three-point shooting load in the absence of Farmer and Miller. Griech leads the team with 19 treys made, while Western has drained 15 long-distance shots this year.
Freshman Lindsay Austin and redshirt frosh Pam Brown are averaging 7.7 and 6.9 points, respectively.
The Falcons are 1-2 at Anderson Arena, 1-5 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year.
From long distance, a number of Falcons have posted impressive shooting percentages. Farmer is shooting .522 from behind the arc, having gone 12-of-23 from long range. Western is shooting .429 (15-of-35) from behind the arc, while Griech has a .413 percentage (19-of-46). Additionally, sophomore Megan Jerome has made seven of her 13 long-range shots (.538) this year.
Overall, Austin is shooting a team-best .476 from the field, having made 30 shots in 63 attempts. Farmer and Brown are shooting .459 and .449, respectively, on the year.
Brown and Western are currently tied for the team lead in rebounding (5.8 rpg apiece), followed by Miller (5.7 rpg). Austin leads the team with 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 2.5 assists to date. Western averages 1.5 steals and paces the team with 12 blocks on the year (1.1 bpg).
BGSU is shooting .406 from the floor, while the opponents have a field-goal percentage of .425. The Falcons are sinking free throws at a .718 rate, while the opponents are shooting .728 from the stripe. BG is shooting .385 from three-point range and averaging 6.7 triples per game, while the foes have shot .325 from behind the arc.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING AKRON: Akron will bring a 2-9 record to Anderson Arena ... the Zips have lost the last three games, and have been idle since a Dec. 22 home loss to Xavier, 84-57 ... senior center Cheryl Bowles is the lone Zip in double digits, with 13.3 points per game ... she also leads the team in rebounds (6.0 rpg) and steals (1.4 spg) ... senior guard Jamie Krivak is averaging 8.1 points per game, while sophomore Sandy Martin is averaging 6.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game ... junior guard Hollie Stephenson is averaging 6.2 points ... UA, like BG, has been hit with the injury bug this year, as seniors Katie Hank and Amanda Croston and junior Felecia Bell all have been out ... Bell is out for the year, while the other two players could return soon ... Bowles and Krivak are the only two players to have started every game ... Martin, Stephenson and freshman guard Katrina Carter rounded out the starters for the XU game ... UA is 1-6 on the road this year, with the win coming in the season opener vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore ... the other win came over Wright State in a neutral-site game in Hawai'i ... UA welcomed back 11 letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's 11-17 team that went 7-9 in the MAC ... head coach Roxanne Allen has a 41-57 in her fourth year with the school ... she has an overall record of 156-148 in her 12th year.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG and Buffalo are tied, 2-2), and BGSU holds a commanding 28-1 advantage over Akron ... the Falcons have won the last two overall meetings since UA's only win, in the 1999 MAC Tournament ... BGSU is 14-0 in home games vs. the Zips, including last year's 94-72 victory at Anderson (Jan. 26, 2000) ... in that game, the Falcons set school records with 16 three-pointers made and 38 attempted.
LAST TIME OUT: Host Wisconsin-Milwaukee pulled away in the second half for a 68-48 victory over the Falcons Thursday (Dec. 28) ... the Panthers outscored the Brown and Orange, 40-19, in the second half ... BGSU led by a 29-28 count at the break, and scored the first basket of the second half ... then, however, UWM put together a 10-0 run ... the Falcons had an 8-0 run to answer, but another 10-0 run by the home team put UWM up, 50-40 ... BGSU would not get any closer than eight points thereafter ... junior Francine Miller, returning after missing five games due to injury, led the Falcons with 11 points off the bench ... senior Afra Smith had 10 points ... senior Angie Farmer also returned after missing five contests due to injury ... she had six points in just four minutes, going 2-of-3 from three-point land ... Maria Viall had a game-high 19 points for UWM.
SHORTHANDED: The Falcons played five consecutive games without three starters ... junior Francine Miller and seniors Jackie Adlington and Angie Farmer all sat out due to injuries ... prior to that time, Miller had played in all 60 games since coming to BGSU, while Farmer had seen action in 51 consecutive contests ... BG went 2-3 with the three starters out.
INJURY REPORT: Junior Francine Miller and senior Angie Farmer have returned to action after missing five games apiece ... Miller suffered an injury to her right meniscus early in the first half of the Detroit game (Dec. 2) ... she returned in the UWM game, and led BG with 11 points off the bench ... Farmer, the team's second-leading scorer (behind Miller), was hobbled with a stress fracture in her foot ... she also missed five contests, but saw action at Milwaukee ... Farmer scored six points in just four minutes of that contest ... senior center Jackie Adlington went down in the first half of the season-opening win over Youngstown State ... Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot ... Adlington is scheduled to visit the doctor Thursday (Jan. 4), and may be available for Saturday's (Jan. 6) Ohio game.
DEFENSE! The Falcons held Wright State to just 52 points and a field-goal percentage of .303 (Dec. 16) ... the point total represented the second lowest allowed by the Falcons in the Dee Knoblauch Era (50 vs. Northern Illinois on Feb. 7, 2000) ... likewise, the field-goal percentage, which marked BG's best defensive effort since Akron hit just .300 on Feb. 26, 1999, was the second-lowest output for a Falcon opponent in Knoblauch's tenure ... BGSU had not held an opponent under 73 points this year prior to the Wright State contest.
DEFENSE! PART TWO: The Falcons held Wright State without a point for a span of 8:22 in the second half ... after WSU scored with 12:12 left, cutting BG's lead to 45-40, the Falcons would not let the Raiders score again until the 3:50 mark.
DEFENSE! PART THREE: The Falcons had not held an opponent to fewer than 32 points in a half all year, through the first nine games ... BGSU allowed Wright State just 24 points in the first 20 minutes, though, then held WSU to 28 in the second half.
60 ON "D" IS KEY: Not surprisingly, BGSU has been quite successful when limiting the opposition to 60 points or less over the years ... the Falcons held Wright State to just 52 points (Dec. 16), the first time BG had kept the opponent under 60 markers this season ... the Falcons have won 20 consecutive games when holding the opposition under 60 points ... since 1991-92, the Brown and Orange is 44-3 when holding foes to 60 points or less.
BLOCK PARTY: After blocking a total of 39 shots (1.39 per game) last year, the Falcons already have blocked 36 shots this year ... BGSU is averaging 3.3 blocks per game.
BLOCK PARTY II: Junior Dana Western entered the season with a career total of eight blocked shots ... through 11 games this year, she already has a total of 12 rejections to her credit.
LUCKY 700: The Wright State game marked the 700th varsity contest in the history of the Falcon women's basketball program ... after the UWM contest, BGSU currently has an all-time record of 427-274, good for a winning percentage of .609.
67 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 67 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a three-pointer in the Detroit contest, the first of her career ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this year, after just five games ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through 11 games this season, the Falcons are averaging 6.73 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green has made at least five treys in every game but one this season.
DOUBLE DIGITS: A total of 10 different players have hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion this year ... eight different players hit double digits in that category during all of last year.
THE TREYS KEEP COMING: The Falcons, despite playing without two players (Angie Farmer and Francine Miller) ranked second and third, respectively, in career three-point field-goal percentage, still were deadly from behind the arc in the first week of the two players' absence ... BGSU averaged 7.33 treys per game that week and shot .449 (22-of-49) from long range ... the main perpetrators were junior Dana Western (.591, 8-of-14) and sophomore Kim Griech (.500, 9-of-18) ... with their success from long range this season, both Western and Griech are also among the BGSU career top-10 in three-point accuracy ... in all, the Falcons were 29 of 70 (.414) in the five games without Farmer and Miller, averaging 5.80 treys per game during that time.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BGSU's win over Charleston Southern (Nov. 24) ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament.
DOUBLE TROUBLE, PART TWO (AND THREE): Redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in the win over Charleston Southern ... Brown's totals of 12 points and 12 rebounds were the best of her brief career in each category ... she topped her point total with 13 vs. Detroit ... junior Dana Western had the first double-double of her Falcon tenure against Arizona, with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last two years, BGSU's totals are nearly 60 percent of the totals during those first 12 years ... Knoblauch's teams made 394 treys in 1,110 tries over the first two years.
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance - both school records - in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons hit double digits for the first time in 2000-01, making 11 treys in the win over Charleston Southern ... the Falcons made at least eight triples in four of the next five games.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin has started each of the first 11 games ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, has seen her share of action, though ... Austin is averaging 28.5 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 13.9.
BGSU WINS HOME OPENER, AGAIN: The Falcons kept a rather impressive streak going in the Youngstown State game ... BGSU has now captured 12 of the last 13 home openers ... the only loss among the last 13 home-opening contests came to nationally-ranked Notre Dame, an eventual national semifinalist, in 1996.
1999-2000 FALCONS ENJOY LATE-SEASON SUCCESS: BGSU is looking to build upon the success enjoyed late last season ... after going nearly all year without winning back-to-back games, the Falcons had a 6-16 overall record (and a 4-8 MAC mark, tied for the 11th seed) on Valentine's Day ... the Brown and Orange rallied to win five consecutive games, including road wins against Akron and Buffalo to close the regular season, winding up in a deadlock for fifth place overall ... BG capped off the win streak with a victory over Ohio in the MAC Tournament First Round, before seeing the season come to an end with a quarterfinal loss to Western Michigan ... the Falcons ended the year with an overall record of 11-17, and BGSU went 8-8 in MAC regular-season play.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games.
ANDER-RIFFIC! In eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games, having made 94 treys in 204 attempts ... the Falcons made at least eight triples in each game, and drained 67 in the last five home contests combined ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round game against Ohio, the Falcons were 102-of-223 (.457) from long range against league foes at Anderson.
IS THAT A NEW RECORD? Before Dee Knoblauch returned to campus, the school records for three-point field goals made and attempted in a season were 97 and 296, respectively ... Knoblauch's first team made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts, and last year's squad shattered the records yet again, making a MAC-record 259 triples in 710 attempts.
FARMER FIRES FOR THREE: Last year, as a junior, Angie Farmer shattered the BGSU seasonal records for three-pointers made and attempted ... Farmer sank 78 treys in 186 attempts last winter, and her .419 success rate ranked sixth on that BGSU single-season list ... four players -- Farmer, Francine Miller (43, fifth), Sherry Kahle (42, sixth) and Jaymee Wappes (39, eighth) -- cracked the BG season list for three-pointers made.
MILLER MAKES 'EM, TOO: While Farmer was setting the single-season school record for three-pointers made last year, Francine Miller was setting the three-point percentage mark ... Miller's .453 success rate from behind the arc (43-of-95) broke the previous record of .439, set by Farmer in the 1998-99 campaign.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is ranked second on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage (.430, 123-of-286), while junior Francine Miller is third (.410, 82-of-200) ... sophomore Kim Griech is sixth on that list (.385, 45-of-117), while junior Dana Western is in ninth place (.358, 39-of-109) ... Farmer is in second place all-time with 123 three-pointers made, while Miller is fourth with 82 ... Griech has broken into that list, and currently ranks ninth ... Farmer is second with 286 career three-point attempts, while Miller and Griech are seventh (200) and 10th (117), respectively.
