Bowling Green, Ohio -
The Bowling Green Falcons (8-12-4) completed their first home sweep of the season, defeating the 13th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers (11-8-1) 4-3. Saturday night's loss marked the first time that RPI had been beaten twice in the same weekend this season.
Bowling Green jumped out to a 1-0 lead 11:25 into the first period with a goal from defenseman Marc Barlow. Dennis Williams set up Barlow's second of the year, with Tyler Knight also garnering an assist on the play.
Senior Ryan Murphy added a power-play tally two minutes later. Murphy's 11th of the season extended his point streak to 10 games, tying his career best. Scott Hewson and Grady Moore were awarded assists.
Rensselaer winger Andrew McPherson cut Bowling Green's lead to 2-1 late in the first. McPherson lifted the puck past Falcon goalie Tyler Masters after the BG defense was unable to clear the rebound off a shot by Marc Cavosie. Brother Eric Cavosie also assisted McPherson's fifth of the year.
Falcon freshman Roger Leonard scored the lone goal of the second period to regain the two-point advantage. Greg Day passed the puck up to a breaking Leonard, who shot while sliding on his stomach after being tripped up by an RPI defenseman.
With Rensselaer down two men, D'Arcy McConvey scored Bowling Green's second power-play goal of the game at 14 seconds of the third stanza. McConvey's third marker of the season was unassisted.
Rensselaer stormed back in the third, scoring two goals and threatening to tie things up late. Midway through the period winger Ben Barr brought the score to 4-2 with his second lamp-lighter of the season. Assisting were Andrew McPherson and Eric Cavosie with their second points of the contest.
Rensselaer pulled goalie Nathan Marsters late in the third in favor of the extra attacker and the strategy paid off, with Matt Murley and Ryan Shields setting up Jim Vickers' sixth goal of the season. Vickers' goal brought the Engineers within one of tying the game, but the Falcons were able to hold off the RPI onslaught for the final 12 seconds of regulation.
Falcon goalie Tyler Masters raised his record to 8-10-3 by making 16 saves. RPI netminder Nathan Marsters turned aside 22 Falcon shots.
With two power-play goals on the night, Bowling Green extended its streak to nine games with a score on the man-advantage. The Falcon penalty killing unit has been stellar as of late, allowing no goals in the last 23 opponent opportunities and only one in the last 35.
Bowling Green heads to Miami next weekend for a two-game series against the RedHawks. Both games will start at 7:35 p.m. at Miami's Goggin Ice Arena.
