THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to break a three-game Mid-American Conference losing streak, will attempt to do so on the road. The Falcons (8-10 overall, 4-3 MAC) will head to Kalamazoo for a Wednesday (Jan. 31) contest against Western Michigan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at WMU's University Arena (5,800).
Following the WMU game, the Falcons will return home to face defending league champion Kent State University in Saturday (Feb. 3) action. That game, scheduled for a noon start at Anderson Arena (5,000), will be televised on Fox Sports Net Ohio.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 32-41. She has a 21-18 ledger in MAC play. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 214-160 (.572). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a record of 8-10 on the season, and the Falcons are 4-3 in MAC play. After opening league action with four consecutive wins, the Falcons have lost the last three contests.
BGSU's latest setback came in overtime, a 77-74 loss to visiting Buffalo Saturday (Jan. 27). Junior Francine Miller had a game-high 21 points in the contest, including the game-tying three-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation. The Falcons lost a pair of road games earlier last week, to Kent State (Jan. 22), 92-55, and Northern Illinois (Jan. 24) by a 73-58 count. The KSU loss broke the Falcons' eight-game MAC regular-season win streak which dated to last February.
Knoblauch has all 14 of her players back in uniform after playing five consecutive December contests without three starters. Two of those starters, Miller and senior Angie Farmer, returned to active duty for the final December game, while the third, senior Jackie Adlington, missed 12 games after breaking her foot early in the season opener. Adlington saw brief action vs. Central Michigan (Jan. 9), and has been in Knoblauch's regular rotation ever since.
Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.8 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, missed the NIU game with a thigh injury suffered at KSU. She returned in a big way vs. Buffalo, hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers en route to her 21-point performance.
Farmer is second on the team with 9.4 points per outing, while sophomore Kim Griech is third with 8.8 points per game. Junior Dana Western and senior Afra Smith are fourth and fifth, respectively, with 8.6 and 8.4 points per contest.
True freshman Lindsay Austin is averaging 6.4 points, while redshirt frosh Pam Brown averages 6.3 markers.
The Falcons are 4-3 at Anderson Arena, 2-7 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year. In MAC play, BGSU is 3-1 at home and 1-2 on the road.
From long distance, several Falcons have posted impressive shooting percentages. Farmer is shooting .451 from behind the arc, having made 23 of her 51 three-point field-goal attempts. Western is shooting .410 (24-of-55) from long distance, while Griech is shooting .410 (34-of-83) from behind the arc, with a team-high 2.0 treys per game. After the UB game, Miller is shooting .327 from three-point land, having gone 18-of-55. Additionally, sophomore Megan Jerome has made 10 of her 19 three-point attempts (.526) on the year.
Overall, freshman Kelly Kapferer is shooting .475 from the floor, having gone 29-of-61. Smith leads the team with 60 field goals made, and has a field-goal pct. of .451. In limited action, Adlington has gone 12-of-24 from the field (.500).
Western currently leads the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg), followed by Brown (4.8 rpg) and Miller (4.8 rpg). Adlington is averaging 5.5 boards in her six games, and has led the team in rebounding in each of the last four contests.
Austin leads the team with 3.8 assists and has 1.5 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 3.0 assists and has 1.7 steals in her 12 games to date. Western averages 1.4 steals and paces the team with 21 blocked shots on the year (1.2 bpg).
BGSU is shooting .410 from the floor, while the opponents have a field-goal percentage of .429. The Falcons are sinking free throws at a .726 rate, while the opponents are shooting .714 from the stripe. BG is shooting .392 from three-point range and averaging 7.28 triples per game, while the foes have shot .297 from behind the arc.
In MAC games only, the Falcons are shooting .743 from the charity stripe and .401 from three-point land, while averaging 8.14 treys per game.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN: Western Michigan enters the BGSU game with an overall record of 4-13, and the Broncos have a 1-5 MAC mark after a pair of road losses last week ... WMU fell to Kent State, 84-51, Wednesday (Jan. 24), and lost an 82-46 game at Toledo Saturday (Jan. 27) ... Western has played just three home games this season to date, going 1-2 ... the Broncos have split a pair of MAC home contests, beating Akron while losing to Ball State ... individually, junior forward Karen Deurloo leads the team with 15.9 points per game, while senior guard Sarah Hurrle averages 15.3 ... Deurloo leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per contest ... sophomore guard Lisa Bruwer averages 9.6 points, but has missed the last six games due to a back injury ... the Broncos also are without sophomore forward Kristin Koetsier, an All-MAC First-Team selection a year ago ... she played in just four games this year after suffering an acl injury in the summer, and will apply for medical redshirt status ... junior guards Brooke and Brianne Gallert average 4.2 and 3.4 assists, respectively ... a pair of freshmen, guard Emily Samuelson (6.5 ppg) and center Lori Crisman (6.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg), join Deurloo, Brianne Gallert and Hurrle in the probable starting five ... last year, WMU 18-12 overall and 14-2 in league action en route to an NIT appearance ... Ron Stewart is 48-54 in his fourth year as a head coach, all in Kalamazoo.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 3-2), and BGSU holds a 23-17 lead over Western Michigan ... the Broncos have won the last four games, however, including a MAC Tournament quarterfinal game last year (87-63, March 2, 2000) ... BGSU is 10-8 all-time in games played in Kalamazoo, but WMU won the last contest there, a 67-56 decision two years ago (Feb. 13, 1999).
LAST TIME OUT: The Falcons played catch-up all day, and finally did indeed catch Buffalo, but the visiting Bulls gutted out a 77-74 overtime victory Saturday ( Jan. 27) ... UB's Tiffany Bell had a game-high 36 points ... for the Falcons, junior Francine Miller had 21 points, including a three-pointer that sent the game to overtime, while senior Jackie Adlington and classmate Dana Western joined her in double digits ... Adlington had the first double-double of her Falcon career, posting BGSU career-best totals of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Western scored 13 points off the bench ... BGSU trailed by a 24-10 margin, but rallied to within five points at the half ... the Falcons forged a tie when Western hit a pair of free throws at the 17:02 mark, but UB built the lead back up to nine points, and the Bulls still led by eight with 3:21 left ... the Falcons came all the way back, though, tying the game as Miller drained her fifth three-pointer of the day with just eight seconds left ... in overtime, sophomore Kim Griech hit a trey with just 15 seconds gone to give the Falcons the lead for the first time all day, but UB rallied and took the lead by a point in the last minute ... with 34 seconds remaining and the Falcons looking to take the lead, UB's Sonia Ortega stole a BG inbounds pass and fed Virginia Jennings for a hoop ... BG could not get any closer than three points thereafter ... the Bulls shot .474 for the game, making 27 shots in 57 attempts from the field, while BGSU had a .408 shooting percentage (29-of-71) ... the Falcons went 7-of-20 (.350) from three-point land, while UB was just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc.
WORKING OVERTIME: The Falcons' overtime loss to Buffalo Saturday (Jan. 27) was BGSU's first OT game in nearly two years, since a 98-93 home triumph over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 20, 1999 ... in that game, as in the UB game, Francine Miller hit a three-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation to force the extra session ... the loss to Buffalo broke a five-game BG winning streak in overtime games ... the Falcons had not lost an OT contest since an 82-77 setback at Ohio in the 1996 MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round (March 5, 1996).
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: The Falcons recorded a season-low 12 turnovers in the Northern Illinois game, and had 15 against Buffalo ... BGSU had as many or more turnovers as the opponent in each of the first 11 games this season ... in the seven MAC contests, though, the Falcons have had the same or fewer turnovers than the opposition four times ... during that seven-game stretch, the Falcons have averaged 17.71 turnovers to the opponents' 17.86.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games ... the Brown and Orange sank a season-high 12 against Akron, and added 10 at Ohio, nine vs. CMU and eight vs. both Toledo and NIU ... BG has made a total of 216 successful triples in the last 23 MAC regular-season contests (9.39 per game).
ANDER-RIFFIC! Believe it or not, the Falcons' total of seven three-pointers made against Buffalo Saturday (Jan. 27) is the team's lowest total in a MAC home game in two years ... in eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games ... this year, the Falcons have made 12 treys vs. Akron (Jan. 3), nine against CMU (Jan. 9), eight vs. Toledo (Jan. 13) and seven vs. UB ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round game vs. Ohio last February, BGSU is averaging 10.6 treys and shooting .439 (138-of-314) over the last 13 home games vs. MAC teams ... the Falcons have made at least seven triples in every one of those games.
ADLINGTON IS BACK: Over the past few games, senior Jackie Adlington has asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with ... she suited up for the Central Michigan game (Jan. 9), marking the first time since the season opener that she was in uniform ... Adlington had not played since breaking her foot vs. Youngstown State (Nov. 18) ... she played just one minute against Central, but has averaged 6.8 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds in the last four games ... she set a BGSU best with seven rebounds vs. Toledo, then matched that total at KSU ... Adlington had eight points, her most since coming to BG, in the game at NIU, adding six boards ... then, vs. Buffalo, she set BG highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds, posting the first double-double of her brief Falcon tenure ... Adlington has led the Falcons in rebounding in each of the last four games ... she has recorded her impressive totals in an average of just 17.8 minutes per game over the last four contests.
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, a total of 11 different players have made at least one start ... only one player, senior Afra Smith, has started all 18 games this year ... coach Dee Knoblauch has utilized nine different starting lineups this season ... she used only three different combinations during all of last season, and used the same lineup for the last 19 games of 1999-2000.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Four different Falcons have posted double-doubles this year ... senior Jackie Adlington became the latest addition to that group, after totalling 14 points and 11 rebounds vs. Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... the double-double was the first of her BGSU career ... junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BG's win over Charleston Southern on Nov. 24 ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament ... redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in that Charleston Southern game, while junior Dana Western had her first-ever double-double vs. Arizona (Dec. 8).
DOUBLE DIGITS: Jackie Adlington, as noted, had 14 points in the Buffalo game Saturday (Jan. 27) ... Adlington became the 12th different Falcon player to hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion this year ... eight different players hit double digits in that category during all of last year.
FALCONS IN NCAA RANKINGS: The Falcons were listed in several team and individual categories when the NCAA released the latest national statistics ... as a team, BGSU was ranked 10th in the nation in three-point field goals per game, with an average of 7.25 ... the Falcons were 12th in the country in three-point field-goal percentage, at .396, through games of Jan. 22 ... individually, sophomore Kim Griech was 18th in the country with a three-point field-goal pct. of .441 ... after the NIU and UB games, the Falcons are now shooting treys at a .392 rate and making 7.28 per game, while Griech's long-range rate is .410.
KAPFERER KONNECTS: Freshman Kelly Kapferer made five of her six shots from the field en route to a season-high 10 points in the win at Ohio (Jan. 6) ... for her efforts, she was rewarded with her first collegiate start vs. CMU ... in that game, Kapferer again scored 10 points, going 5-of-8 from the floor ... Kapferer is shooting .567 (17-of-30) over the last six games, after shooting 12-of-31 (.387) during the first 12 contests of the year.
BENCH PROVIDES A LIFT: Not surprisingly, BGSU's injury woes in December seem to have translated into greater experience and depth in January ... the Falcons have gotten tremendous production from the bench players in several recent games ... in the win at Ohio (Jan. 6), BG's bench outscored the Bobcats by a 41-14 margin ... the BG bench players outpointed their Toledo counterparts, 33-13 (Jan. 13), and the Falcons held a 35-7 bench advantage at NIU ... against Buffalo (Jan. 27), BG held a whopping 34-3 advantage in that department ... over the last seven games, BG has gotten 267 points (38.1 per game) from the bench players to the opponents' 135 (19.3 avg.).
SMART, VERY SMART: The BGSU women's basketball team has had a great deal of success in the classroom ... as a team, the Falcons have a grade-point average of 3.13 through the fall semester ... eight of the team's 14 players have a cumulative GPA of 3.28 or better, led by sophomore Megan Jerome at a perfect 4.00 through her first three semesters at the University ... senior Angie Farmer has a 3.78 GPA.
SMART, VERY SMART II (OR, "FOUR-POINT GUARDS"): The Falcons' four true freshmen seem to have successfully made the transition to college life ... in addition to receiving regular playing time on the court, all four had a GPA of 3.45 or better during their first semester on campus ... point guards Lindsay Austin and Emily Pohl each had a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall, while Stefanie Wenzel had a GPA of 3.76 ... Kelly Kapferer had a 3.45 GPA in the fall ... on the hardwood, Austin, Kapferer and Pohl all have played in every game this year, while Wenzel has seen action in 13 of the 18 contests.
FARMER'S FREE THROWS: Senior Angie Farmer entered the season with a career free-throw percentage of .813, and has done nothing to hurt that stat this year ... this season, she has missed just two free throws in 39 attempts, for a .949 success rate ... she made her first 22 free-throw attempts of the MAC campaign, including sinking all 10 charity tosses in the win over Akron ... Farmer enters the WMU game with a .963 conversion rate (26-of-27) in league play.
74 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 74 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions -- most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE TREY: The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through 18 games this season, the Falcons are averaging 7.28 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green has made at least five treys in every game but two this season.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are sinking free throws at a .726 clip ... BGSU shot .769 or better from the line in each of the first five games this year, shooting .803 (106-of-132) during that time ... then, with two of the team's top shooters injured (Angie Farmer and Francine Miller), the Brown and Orange shot just .571 (44-of-77) over the next six contests ... bolstered by a 10-for-10 effort from Farmer, the Falcons shot .818 (18-of-22) vs. Akron (Jan. 3) ... BG did even better at Ohio (Jan. 6), going 14-of-15 (.933) ... the Falcons shot .773 (68-of-88) from the free-throw line over the first five MAC games, before stumbling (4-of-11) at NIU ... BG righted the ship, making 9-of-10 vs. Buffalo, and the Falcons are shooting .743 from the line in conference games this year.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last two-plus years, BGSU's totals are over 78 percent of the totals during those first 12 seasons ... through the UB game, Knoblauch's teams have made 525 treys in 1,444 tries since she became head coach of her alma mater.
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance -- both school records -- in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons have hit double digits three times in 2000-01, including twice in MAC play to date ... BG made 11 treys vs. Charleston Southern, 12 against Akron and 10 at Ohio.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin started each of the first 17 games ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, made her first collegiate start vs. Buffalo Saturday (Jan. 27) ... Austin is averaging 28.7 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 13.2.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Four current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is currently in second place on the all-time school list for career three-point percentage (.427, 134-of-314), while junior Francine Miller is third (.415, 95-of-229) ... sophomore Kim Griech is now fifth on that list (.390, 60-of-154), while junior Dana Western is in eighth place (.372, 48-of-129) ... Farmer is second all-time in three-pointers made, while Miller is fourth ... Griech is eighth and Western 10th on that list ... Farmer is second in three-point attempts, while Miller is now fifth ... Griech is eighth, while Western is 10th.
IS THAT A NEW RECORD? Before Dee Knoblauch returned to campus, the school records for three-point field goals made and attempted in a season were 97 and 296, respectively ... Knoblauch's first team made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts, and last year's squad shattered the records yet again, making a MAC-record 259 triples in 710 attempts ... currently, the 2000-01 squad is on a pace to make "only" 204 treys.
