SERIES HISTORY
Bowling Green trails in the all-time series versus Nebraska Omaha with a 3-4-0 record. Five of the previous seven meetings were played at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The two teams split a non-conference series on Jan. 2-3, 1999 (BG 4-2, UNO 6-1) and a CCHA series on Feb. 4-5, 2000 (UNO 4-3, BG 3-2). The Mavericks won last year's CCHA Championship play-in game (3-1). BG and UNO continued their "splitting" ways at the BGSU Ice Arena last month (UNO 3-1, BG 7-2 on Dec. 8-9).
PREVIEWING NEBRASKA OMAHA
The Mavericks were idle this past weekend after winning both games in the Alabama-Huntsville tournament. UNO defeated UMass-Lowell (5-2) and Canisius (3-1) to win the title.
Nebraska Omaha is led in scoring by sophomore forward David Brisson (10-9--19, 3 PPG), junior forward Jeff Hoggan (7-11--18, 4 PPG), senior forward Allan Carr (9-7--16) and sophomore defenseman Greg Zanon (3-10--13). UNO is averaging 2.82 goals per game, while allowing 2.86 gpg.
Fourth-year head coach Mike Kemp has primarily used freshman Dan Ellis (9-9-1, 2.76, .905) between the pipes. Back-up goalie Rodney McLeod has a 2-1 record in four appearances. UNO's power play has scored on 18 of 138 opportunities (13.0%), while the penalty killing has stopped 116 of its opponents 135 chances (85.9%).
REVIEWING THE PRINCETON SERIES
Bowling Green swept a road series for the first time this season in recording back-to-back victories (8-3, 5-0) at Princeton.
After falling behind 1-0 just 35 seconds into Friday's contest, BG's Austin de Luis tied the game at the 1:43 mark off assists from linemates Phil Barski and Ryan Wetterberg. BG went ahead 2-1 on Ryan Murphy's 10th of the campaign. Greg Day and Scott Hewson assisted on the Falcon lamp-lighter. The Tigers tied the game at two when Chris Corrinet scored with 1:54 left in the opening period.
The Falcons scored four times on 11 shots in the middle period to chase Princeton starting goalie Nate Nomeland. D'Arcy McConvey scored a four-on-three power-play goal off assists from Marc Barlow and Day at 1:48 to snap the 2-2 deadlock. Senior captain Doug Schueller recorded his first of the season from Murphy and Hewson at 4:53 of the second period for the game-winning goal.
Freshman Mark Wires tallied his third of the year at 10:49 from Dennis Williams and Roger Leonard. It was Williams' first point since Jan. 22, 2000, against Alabama-Huntsville. Greg Day completed the second period scoring with his team-leading 14th goal. His unassisted tally came while Kevin Bieksa was serving a minor penalty.
Roger Leonard scored his second of the season at the 11:57 mark of the third period with assists being credited to Williams and Wires. Phil Barski netted his first collegiate goal during a four-on-four situation at the 15:02 mark. Brian Escobedo and Schueller garnered assists on BG's eighth goal. PU's Brad Parson scored a power-play goal with 3:03 left in the contest to finish the scoring.
BG's Tyler Masters made 27 saves including 11 in the third period. Nate Nomeland started for the Tigers and made 21 saves in the first two periods, while Dave Stathos made five saves in the third period. The Falcons scored on one of their three power-play chances, while Princeton recorded one man-advantage marker in five opportunities.
BG won its fourth game in the last five contests with a 5-0 blanking at Princeton Saturday night.
Senior left wing Curtis Valentine notched his fourth of the year just 2:34 into the contest when he redirected a shot by Marc Barlow past PU goaltender Dave Stathos. Austin de Luis garnered the second assist on BG's game-winning goal.
The Falcons increased their lead to 2-0 when Grady Moore scored from the blueline with 5:03 remaining in the opening period. Ryan Murphy and Greg Day assisted on Moore's second of the year. Both of BG's first two goals came with the man-advantage.
BG's Ryan Murphy tallied his eighth goal in the last eight games when he scored 54 seconds into the middle stanza. Scott Hewson and Day assisted on Murphy's 11th of the season.
Freshman defenseman Kevin Bieksa scored his second of the campaign 24 seconds into the third period off an assist from Greg Day.
Senior right wing Dennis Williams scored his first goal since Dec. 30, 1999, when he deflected in a blueline shot by Kevin Bieksa with 1:08 left in the contest.
BG sophomore netminder Tyler Masters made 40 saves including 16 in the third period for his third career shutout. Stathos turned aside 18 Falcon shots. BG converted on two of its five power play chances, while stopping all seven Tiger man-advantage opportunities. Princeton had a 5-on-3 for 1:46 midway through the third period.
THE LAST TIME
BG and UNO split a series at the BGSU Ice Arena on Dec. 8-9, 2000.
In the first game, the Mavericks scored once in each period for a 3-1 win. Ryan Murphy scored BG's lone goal, while UNO's Allan Carr had a goal and two assists.
The next night Greg Day scored twice and five different Falcons added two assists apiece to back the 26-save effort of Tyler Masters in a 7-2 BG triumph.
FALCON TIDBITS
BG is in the midst of its second six-game road trip this season. The Falcons went 1-3-2 during November's six-game swing with all three losses coming by one goal. BG is currently 3-1 on this road trip.
After scoring the first goal once in the first 10 games, BG has taken the early lead in six of the last 10 contests. The Falcons are 4-1-2 when scoring first.
BG has won four of its last five contests outscoring its opponents 25-13.
BG's penalty killing units stopped 11 of 12 Princeton power plays on the weekend including a five-on-three for 1:46 midway through Saturday's third period.
Tyler Masters recorded his third career shutout in Saturday's 5-0 victory at Princeton. Masters has not allowed more than three goals in any appearance since Nov. 19, a span of nine games. In the last eight contests, he has a 4-2-1 record and has lowered his goals-against average from 2.94 to 2.66.
Greg Day had six points (1-5) in BG's sweep of Princeton. He has four multiple-point games in the last five contests scoring 11 points on five goals and six assists. Day has already set a career-high for goals in a season with 14.
Scott Hewson extended his career-best point streak to six games by recording two assists on Friday and one on Saturday. Hewson has one goal and nine assists for 10 points during his streak. He also has a plus/minus rating of +9 in the six games. His 14 points this year better his previous high of 13 set last season. Hewson and Louis Mass are tied for the team lead in +/- at +5.
Ryan Murphy extended his career-best six-game goal streak by scoring once each night at Princeton. After scoring four times in his first 12 games this year, Murphy has seven lamp-lighters in the last six contests. Murphy's 11 goals this season surpass his previous best of 10 set during the 1998-99 campaign.
Dennis Williams snapped a 24-game pointless streak with two assists on Friday. He scored his first goal since Dec. 30, 1999, in Saturday's game.
Austin de Luis had a goal on Friday and assisted on BG's first goal on Saturday giving him four points (2-2) in the last five contests.
In the last five games (four on the road), BG has scored eight power-play goals in 28 opportunities (28.6%).
Only six players have seen action in all 20 contests this year with BG's losing 33 man-games to injuries.
Bowling Green is averaging 25.65 shots on goal per game, while allowing 32.90 shots per contest.
The Falcons have outscored their opponents 22-17 in the third period this season.
