The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after splitting a pair of Mid-American Conference road matches over the weekend, now returns home for the next five contests. The Falcons (4-3-2, 1-2-1 MAC) of head coach Andy Richards will step outside of MAC competition for a Wednesday (Oct. 3) home match vs. Youngstown State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
Following the YSU contest, the Brown and Orange will host the MAC's newest member (for women's soccer), the University of Akron, in a Friday afternoon (Oct. 5) tilt. Starting time for that match is 1:30 at Cochrane.
Last week, the Falcons rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 4-2 win at Northern Illinois University Friday (Sept. 28), before dropping a 1-0 decision to first-place Western Michigan University two days later.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS: Andy Richards is in his second year as a head coach, and has a record of 14-13-3 heading into the YSU match. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
BIGGEST RALLY IN SCHOOL HISTORY: As mentioned, the Falcons rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 4-2 victory at Northern Illinois Friday (Sept. 28) ... that marked the first time that BG had come back from two goals down to post a win in school history ... the Brown and Orange had rallied from two down to tie on one occasion ... the Falcons had trailed at Marshall by a 3-1 count on Oct. 10, 1999, before Michelle Lisy scored twice in the final 3:18 of regulation.
THE OPPONENTS: Youngstown State enters the week with an overall record of 1-9-0, and the Penguins are 0-1 in Horizon League play. YSU will be looking to snap an eight-match losing streak, having lost at Niagara (9-1, Sept. 26) and at home to Butler (3-1, Sept. 28) and Southern Utah (3-0, Sept. 30) last week. Sophomore Kara White paces the team with three goals on the season, while senior Christine Handte has seen the majority of the time in goal. Last year, the Penguins went 0-19-0 overall and 0-5 in Mid-Continent Conference play. Head coach Liz Bartley, 7-39-1 in her third year in Youngstown, has a 38-61-2 mark in her sixth year as a collegiate head coach. The school's athletic web site is www.ysu.edu/sports.
Akron checks into the week with an overall mark of 2-7-0, and the Zips will bring a MAC record of 0-5 into Friday's match at Cochrane Field. UA will be looking to snap a six-match losing streak, including setbacks to Marshall (3-0, Sept. 28) and Central Michigan (2-1, Sept. 30) over the weekend. In that CMU match, the Zips took the lead on a Jeannie Stuckey goal with just 7:30 left in the second half, but saw the Chippewas score at 86:06 and 89:09 for the win. Stuckey, a freshman, leads the Zips in goals (seven) and points (16), while freshman Megan McCarthy has seen most of the time in net and is 1-5 with a 3.18 goals-against average. Catherine Byrne is the coach of the first-year program, and has a record of 33-36-11 in her sixth year as a collegiate head coach. Akron's athletic web site is www.gozips.com.
THE SERIES: BGSU leads Youngstown State by a 1-0 margin in the all-time series between the teams. In the only previous meeting (Nov. 2, 1997), the first-year Falcons scored five first-half goals en route to a 7-2 home win in BGSU's season final.
The Falcons and Akron have never met in women's soccer.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Falcons split a pair of MAC road matches last week ... BG won at Northern Illinois Friday (Sept. 28) by a 4-2 score, as freshman Beth Rieman had two goals and an assist ... seniors Mandy Smith and Annmarie Aparo also scored in the win ... on Sunday (Sept. 30), first-place Western Michigan goa a goal late in the first half and recorded a 1-0 win.
CONOVER TIES CAREER SCORING RECORD: With an assist in the NIU match, junior Jill Conover has moved into a tie for the BGSU career scoring lead ... Conover now has 48 points, matching the total amassed by Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) ... the complete lists can be found later in this release.
RIEMAN RALLIES FALCONS: Freshman Beth Rieman scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, and also added an assist, in the win at NIU ... Rieman scored the tying goal, then tallied what proved to be the winning marker ... her five-point match was the highest-scoring effort by a Falcon player in over two years (since Aug. 29, 1999).
ROAD UNBEATEN STREAK ENDS: The Falcons' loss at WMU ended a school-record road unbeaten streak at five matches ... that streak had dated to last season ... despite the loss, the Falcons are still 7-2-2 in road matches and 8-4-2 in all contests away from Cochrane Field since Sept. 15, 2000.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: Seniors Leslie Hepfinger, Mandy Smith and Beth Wechsler are BGSU's tri-captains for the 2001 season.
MOVEMENT ON THE BG SCORING LISTS: Several current Falcons are moving up the school's career scoring lists ... junior Tracy Gleixner is tied with Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) at the top of the goals list ... both players have 18 ... junior Jill Conover is third on that list, with 16 goals ... Conover and senior Beth Wechsler each had an assist last week ... Conover now has 20 career assists, good for second on that list (behind Janice Mentrup's [1997-2000] 23), while Wechsler is third with 16 ... Conover now has 48 career points, moving into a tie with Lisy ... Gleixner is third with 44 career points ... all three lists follow:

NOTING THE FALCONS: Seniors Mandy Smith and Annmarie Aparo each picked up their first goals of the season in the win at NIU ... BGSU's four goals in that win marked the team's highest single-match total since a 5-1 win over Valparaiso on Aug. 29, 1999 ... the Falcons' loss at Western Michigan marked the first time BGSU was held without a goal in nine matches this season ... the Falcons have outshot the opponent just once in the nine contests, with one match (NIU) in which the teams' shot totals were even ... BGSU has been outshot by a 164-89 margin on the year, and the opponents have an 94-42 advantage in shots on goal ... but, BGSU has outscored opponents, 15-12, this season ... junior Erika Flanders has made 80 saves on the year (and freshman Ali Shingler has two), while opposing 'keepers have a total of 27 stops ... already, Flanders is more than two-thirds of the way to breaking her own record for saves in a season ... she set the mark with 118 saves last year ... Flanders owns the school's career records for wins (19), saves (289), complete-match shutouts (nine) and goals-against average (1.60) ... freshman Beth Rieman and senior Beth Wechsler are tied for the team scoring lead in MAC matches, with five points each ... overall, freshmen have combined to score eight of BGSU's 15 goals this season.
