Falcons Travel to Ice Breaker Cup at Maine Bowling Green State University kicks off the 2001-2002 hockey season at the Ice Breaker Cup hosted by the University of Maine. It will mark the first time in school history that the Falcons begin the season at a tournament. Along with BGSU and 8th-ranked Maine will be 11th-ranked St. Cloud State and 13th-ranked Clarkson (rankings by USA Today/American Hockey Poll). The four major hockey conferences will be represented at the Ice Breakers Cup with representatives from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (Bowling Green), the Hockey East Conference (Maine), the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (St. Cloud State) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (Clarkson).
BGSU versus #8 Maine BGSU is 1-7-0 against the Black Bears of Maine with the only Falcon win coming in their first meeting on Dec. 28, 1987 (6-5). Maine has won the last seven straight including the last matchup on Dec. 30, 1992 (6-2). In the series, Maine has outscored Bowling Green 48-23. The Black Bears finished last year with a 20-12-7 record and tied for second place in the Hockey East Conference.
BGSU Versus #11 St. Cloud State BGSU is 3-1-0 against St. Cloud State with the first victory coming in their first meeting on Feb. 24, 1989 (6-2). The last matchup on Feb. 24, 1990, saw the Falcons win by the score of 8-5. In the series, BGSU has outscored the Huskies 22-13. St. Cloud finished as runners-up in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association last year with a 31-9-1 overall record. They are coached by Craig Dahl (Pacific Lutheran '76).
BGSU Versus #13 Clarkson BGSU is 10-11-0 against Clarkson. In the series, BGSU has outscored the Golden Knights 84-78. Clarkson won the 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference Regular-Season Championship, finishing with a 21-11-3 record overall. They are coached by Mark Morris (Colgate '81).
Univ. of Maine Head Coach Shawn Walsh (June 21, 1955 - Sept. 24, 2001) University of Maine coach Shawn Walsh lost his 15-month battle with cancer on Sept. 24, 2001. Walsh had coached the Black Bears for the last 17 seasons and had a 399-215-44 record over that time, along with 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. In 1993 and 1999 Walsh and the Black Bears won the NCAA National Championship. Walsh was a 1978 graduate of Bowling Green State University and was involved with the Falcon hockey program as a student and later as an assistant coach under Ron Mason. The native of White Plains N.Y., earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at BGSU.
Bowling Green State University Head Coach Buddy Powers Buddy Powers (Boston University '75) begins his eighth season as head coach of the Falcons this Friday night at the Ice Breaker Cup. Powers has an overall record of 246-195-35 (.554 pct.) in 13 years as head coach at Bowling Green (1994-SA), Rensselaer (1989-94) and Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89). His record with the Brown and Orange stands at 126-124-20 (.504 pct.). Appointed the head coach at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994, Powers is the fourth head coach in the program's history. It is his 14th season overall on the Falcon bench after serving six years as assistant coach under Jerry York from 1982-88. 2001-2002 Captains This year's team captain will be senior forward Greg Day. The assistant captains will be seniors Marc Barlow and Scott Hewson. Combined, the three players have played in 315 games and scored over 70 goals in the last three years. Day has not missed a single game since he arrived in Bowling Green, appearing in 115 games.
Assistant Coaches Head Coach Buddy Powers will be assisted this season by Dave Smith (Ohio State '92) and Tim Alexander (Bowling Green '80). Smith is in his second season at Bowling Green while this will be Alexander's first year on the bench for his alma mater. Dan St. Jean serves as volunteer coach and is in his fourth season with the Falcons.
Injuries Freshman Matthew Lynn (shoulder) and sophomore Roger Leonard (knee) will not play at this weekend's Ice Breaker. Lynn is out indefinitely while Leonard is expected to miss at least two weeks.
Radio Play-By-Play The flagship stations of Bowling Green State University hockey are WBVI-FM (96.7) in Findlay, and WBGU-FM (88.1) in Bowling Green. All Friday contests will be carried on WBVI and can be heard on-line at www.BGSUFALCONS.com . All Saturday games will be aired on WBGU. Steve Mears is in his third season as the play-by-play voice for the Falcons. Dave Crane is in his third season as the analyst.
"Power"ful Radio The Buddy Powers Radio Show airs live from the Bowling Green Fricker's location every Monday beginning on Oct. 22. The Buddy Powers Show will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the Dan Dakich Show. All BGSU Coaches Radio Shows air on both WBVI-FM (96.7) and WFOB-AM (1430). Also, Powers can be heard every Thursday night on WLQR-AM (1470) at 6:45 p.m. Powers will be interviewed each week by studio host Matt Melzak.
