Falcons Host Buckeyes In Home Opener Bowling Green State University has its home opener this Friday, Oct. 26, against Ohio State University at BGSU Ice Arena. Both Friday and Saturday's faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Falcons are 21-11 all-time at BGSU Ice Arena in home openers in 32 years of varsity hockey. In the last 10 years, Bowling Green is 8-2-0 in its home openers. The last time BGSU had Ohio State as its home-opening opponent was exactly 10 years ago from this Friday, Oct. 26, 1991. The Falcons won 6-5 in overtime. Overall, Bowling Green is 2-0-0 against the Buckeyes in its home openers.
BGSU versus Ohio State Bowling Green is 85-47-4 overall (.640 pct.) against Ohio State. In the BGSU Ice Arena, the Falcons hold a 52-16-2 advantage (.757 pct.) against OSU. In the last 10 meetings between the Ohio schools, the series is split at 5-5-0. The two teams played just twice last season with BGSU winning 5-2 on Nov. 18 and Ohio State winning 5-4 in overtime on Nov. 19.
Bowling Green State University Head Coach Buddy Powers Buddy Powers (Boston University '75) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Falcons. Powers has an overall record of 246-197-37 (.551 pct.) in 13 years as head coach at Bowling Green (1994-SA), Rensselaer (1989-94) and Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89). His record with the Brown and Orange stands at 126-126-22 (.500 pct.). Appointed the head coach at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994, Powers is the fourth head coach in the program's history. It is his 14th season overall on the Falcon bench after serving six years as assistant coach under Jerry York from 1982-88. Friday's game against Ohio State will be his 275th as Falcon head coach.
Falcons Take the Long Way Home Bowling Green hosts its home opener this Friday, Oct. 26, after opening the season with back-to-back road trips. They weren't your ordinary road trips, however. The Falcons opened the season at the Ice Breaker Cup (Oct. 12-13) in Orono, Maine (18 hours), and were at Marquette, Mich., this past weekend (nine hours). The two trips, both reached via bus, totalled over 3,000 miles (3,044) and over 58 hours according to Travelocity.com
BGSU Working Overtime The Falcons played in its second overtime in four games at Northern Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 20. Both overtimes went the distance and finished in ties for the Falcons. Another game was just over 13 seconds away from reaching overtime when NMU scored the deciding goal in a 2-1 Bowling Green loss on Friday, Oct. 19.
Greg's "Day" Nears SR captain Greg Day is just one point away from joining the 100-point club at Bowling Green. The forward scored his first goal of the season at Northern Michigan on Oct. 19 and had an assist on Oct. 20 to give him 99 career points. Day led BGSU in scoring last year with 47 points (20-27). Day will be the 76th player all-time to reach the 100-point club at BGSU.
Two Freshmen Score First Career Goals Two BGSU freshmen recorded their first career points at Northern Michigan on Saturday. Ryan Minnabarriet scored to tie the score at 2-2 in the second period and Colen Pappas netted a power play goal in the third period which tied the score at 3-3. Last Week at Northern Michigan Bowling Green finished 0-1-1 last weekend at Northern Michigan in Marquette, Mich. It was the second-consecutive road trip for the Falcons to begin the 2001-2002 season. BGSU lost 2-1 on Friday when NMU's Chad Theuer scored with just over 13 seconds remaining in the third period for a Wildcat victory. SR Greg Day scored the lone goal for the Brown & Orange, and his first of the season. On Saturday, the Falcons were down 2-0 midway through the second period when Mark Wires changed things with his first goal of the season at 13:01. Just three minutes later, FR Ryan Minnabarriet scored his first collegiate goal to knot the score at 2-2. Facing a 3-2 deficit in the third period, FR Colen Pappas notched his first netter at BGSU to again tie the score at 3-3. JR Tyler Masters had 36 saves in Saturday's game and was voted Perani Cup Player of the Game.
Masters Sets New Career Mark Junior goalie Tyler Masters recorded a career-high 51 saves on Saturday, Oct. 13, against #13 Clarkson at the Ice Breaker Cup, in addition to seven shootout saves. The game finished in a 1-1 tie after Masters knocked away 51 of 52 shots attempted by the Knights. His 51 saves is four shy of BGSU's school record of 55 set by Al Sarachman on Dec. 8, 1974 against Michigan State. In two games, Masters finished with 76 saves.
2001-2002 Captains This year's team captain will be senior forward Greg Day. The assistant captains will be seniors Marc Barlow and Scott Hewson. Combined, the three players have played in 324 games and scored over 70 goals in the last three years. Day has not missed a single game since he arrived in Bowling Green, appearing in 119-straight games.
Assistant Coaches Head Coach Buddy Powers is assisted this season by Dave Smith (Ohio State '92) and Tim Alexander (Bowling Green '80). Smith is in his second season at Bowling Green while this is Alexander's first year on the bench for his alma mater. Dan St. Jean serves as volunteer coach and is in his fourth season with the Falcons.
BGSU Injuries Freshman Matthew Lynn (shoulder) and freshman Denis White (leg) will not play this weekend against Ohio State. Sophomore Roger Leonard (knee) should be available.
Radio Play-By-Play The flagship stations of Bowling Green State University hockey are WBVI-FM (96.7) in Findlay, and WBGU-FM (88.1) in Bowling Green. All Friday contests will be carried on WBVI and can be heard on-line at either www.bgsufalcons.com or www.wbvi.com . All Saturday games will be aired on WBGU. Steve Mears is in his third season as the play-by-play voice for the Falcons.
"Power"ful Radio The Falcons Nest With Buddy Powers will air live from the Bowling Green Fricker's location every Monday throughout the season. The Show airs at 7 p.m. and will be broadcasted on WBVI-FM (96.7). BGSU grad Dave DiNatale will serve as the host and will talk to Powers about the previous games, a preview of the upcoming opponent, and questions from the audience. Also, Powers can be heard every Thursday night on WLQR-AM (1470) at 6:45 p.m. Powers will be interviewed each week by studio host Matt Melzak on "Faceoff: The Hockey Show".
