Three members of the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team will represent the Falcons in regional action this weekend. BGSU is one of 30 colleges and universities in the Midwest that will bring their top players to the 2001 Omni Hotels Region IV Championships, hosted by Michigan State University. The four-day tournament will run Friday through Monday (Oct. 26-29) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Michigan Athletic Club will also hold some tourney matches.
BGSU has three singles competitors and one doubles team entered into the main draw, which gets underway Friday (Oct. 26) at 8:00 a.m. Senior Vitek Wild and juniors Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and Geoff Hiscox will compete in the singles bracket, while the doubles team of Hiscox and Wild also will see action.
Hiscox, who had a successful run at the ITA All-American Championships a few weeks ago, is seeded 15th in the singles bracket. He earned a first-round bye, and will face either Sean Moran of Western Illinois or Valparaiso's Nick Vuko in the second round.
Lopez-Acevedo will meet a Mid-American Conference rival, Ball State's Andrew Seni, in first-round action. Wild will meet Goran Tupalo of Michigan State in Friday action. Tupalo, like Wild, hails from Prague, Czech Rep.
In doubles, the Hiscox/Wild team will face the Anderson-Kinst duo of WIU.
Singles finalists and doubles champions will advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, scheduled for Nov. 8-11 outside Dallas, Texas. A total of 17 regional tournaments, men and women, will take place across the country with over 1,000 players taking part in every division.
There are eight Omni Hotels Regional Championships for men taking place this weekend, at Princeton (Oct. 26-30), North Carolina (Oct. 25-29), Tennessee (Oct. 25-29), TCU (Oct. 25-29), UNLV (Oct. 24-28), Santa Clara (Oct. 26-29) and Pepperdine (Oct. 24-28), in addition to MSU. One men's regional was played last weekend, at Wichita State.
