The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team enters its fifth year under coach Dan Dakich. Dakich has led the Falcons to a 65-48 record and has averaged 18 wins per year during the last three seasons. Two years ago, BGSU captured the regular-season championship of the Mid-American Conference with a 22-8 record and advanced to the NIT.
The Falcons return four starters and nine lettermen from last year's squad which finished 15-14, but won nine of its last 14 games. Five of the current Falcons played on the 2000 MAC Championship squad.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
BGSU will open its regular season at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Falcons have a first-round date with 2001 Sweet 16 participant Ole Miss. Other teams in the event, which will be held November 15-18, include Alaska-Fairbanks, Washington, Delaware, Wichita State, Butler and Radford.
Once the Falcons return home, they will find Michigan waiting for them in Anderson Arena (Nov. 28). Other visitors to BGSU include Defiance (Nov. 24), Marist (Dec. 1), UNC-Wilmington (Dec. 10), and Detroit (Dec. 22).
The Falcons will visit Duquesne (Dec. 5), Evansville (Dec. 15) and Indiana State (Dec. 29).
EXHIBITION GAMES
This will be the first of two exhibition games for the Falcons. BGSU will host Shawnee State, on Thursday, November 8. Argentina Select will be playing its third game in as many days having played at Detroit on Friday and at Youngstown State on Saturday.
Last year, BGSU notched a 112-95 victory (Lithuania) in its lone exhibition game against on overseas opponent.
PRESEASON STUFF
The Falcons were picked to finish fourth in the MAC's East Division, but received the fourth highest number of votes (among 13 schools) to win the postseason conference tournament.
FALCON PLAYERS
BRENT KLASSEN, SR, F, 6-8, 254, KIMBALL, NEB.
Three-year letterwinner and returning starter...averaged 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds...captured the Earl Rupright Team Spirit Award last season...tied for team lead with 23 blocks... has made 32 career starts.
LEN MATELA, SR, C, 6-9, 253, MERRILLVILLE, IND.
Three-year letterman who has started 62 career games...ranks third all-time at BGSU in field goal percentage (57.3), 11th in rebounds (630) and 31st in career scoring with 1,002 points... a two-time All-MAC honorable mention selection...has 20 career double-doubles... averaged 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds last season.
KEITH MCLEOD, SR, G, 6-2, 188, CANTON, OHIO
Three-year letterman who has started 56 career games...ranks eighth in career three-point field goal percentage (.389), 11th in steals (111) and 24th in scoring with 1,140 points...averaged 18.1 points last season...ranked among conference leaders in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, steals and free throw percentage...eclipsed the 20-point mark 13 times.
BRANDON PARDON, SR, G, 6-1, 200, MIDDLE POINT, OHIO
Two-year lettermen who has started 38 career games...ranks second all-time in BGSU career three-point field goal percentage (40.1)... only Falcon to start every game...third player in Falcon history to dish 200 assists or more in a season...finished as the MAC leader and fourth in the country in assists (7.0)...averaged 10.0 points.
CORY RYAN, JR, G, 6-5, 210, FOUNTAIN CITY, IND.
Two-year letterman who started five games last season...led the team with 43 three-point baskets...averaged 6.5 points.
KRIS GERKEN, JR, G, 6-3, 200, HAMLER, OHIO
Walk-on who has earned a scholarship with his hard work and attitude...played in 14 games and scored two points.
KEVIN NETTER, SO, C, 6-10, 209, RICHMOND DALE, OHIO
Shot 55.0 from the field...third on the team in blocks with 18 and second in dunks with 17...averaged 5.1 ppg., and 2 rpg.
JOSH ALMANSON, SO, F, 6-8, 243, BOWLING GREEN, OHIO
A member of the All-MAC freshman team...averaged 7.0 ppg., and 3.4 rpg...shot 67.5 from the field and 85.1 from the line.
JABARI MATTOX, SO, G, 6-1, 186. BLOOMINGDALE, ILL.
Played in nine games during the first semester...scored six points.
ERIK CRAWFORD, FR, G, 6-4, 214, OAKDALE, MINN.
A first-team All-State pick in Minnesota after averaging 22 points, five boards and eight rebounds as a senior at Tartan High School.
CORY EYINK, FR, F, 6-8, 235, MARIA STEIN, OHIO
An All-State performer who averaged 16 point and nine rebounds as a senior at Marion Local High School.
GERMAIN FITCH, FR, F, 6-5, 220, HUNTSVILLE, ALA.
Averaged 10 points at Notre Dame Prep School in Fitchburg, Mass...one of 10 Division I players on the squad.
KRIS WILSON, FR, G, 5-10, 175, KENOVA, W.V.
A first-team All-State pick from West Virginia...scored 1,739 career points and knocked down 242 treys.
JOHN REIMOLD , SO, F, 6-6, 225, GREENVILLE, PA.
MAAC Rookie of the Year at Loyola (Md.) in 2001...averaged 15.6 ppg...will redshirt.
