November 01, 2001 | Ice Hockey
Michigan State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Lee Falaradeau at 2:58 and Brian Maloney at 9:57. It was the the sixth time in seven games this year that BGSU's opponent scored first.
However, Bowling Green senior defeneseman Grady Moore set up from just inside the right circle later in the period and wristed a Ryan Wetterberg miss past MSU goalie Ryan Miller for the Falcons' first goal. Moore's first goal of the season cut the Bowling Green deficit to 2-1 at 11:40.
In the second period, BGSU killed off two power plays for Michigan State in the first 10 minutes. But, back-to-back penalties by Falcons Roger Leonard and Brian Escobedo gave the MSU a 5-on-3 power play at 13:25. MSU's Ash Goldie took advantage with a goal at 14:16 to give the home team a 3-1 advantage.
MSU added to that lead with just seven seconds left in the second period when Kevin Estrada took a pass from behind the net and shot past BG's Tyler Masters for a 4-1 lead.
The two teams traded goals in the third period, first from MSU's Mike Lalonde just 44 seconds into the final period. His goal made the score 5-1. Falcon senior forward Greg Day responded with a power play goal at 3:18, his second of the season. He knocked in the rebound off of a shot by Moore just outside the crease. Ryan Minnabarriet also was credited with an assist.
Later in the period, Jim Slater's goal at 7:55 made it a 6-2 lead for the Spartans. Again, BGSU answered, this time by senior Ryan Wetterberg who knocked in his second goal of the season. Erik Eaton and Moore were credited with assists.
Moore finished the game with one goal and two assists for the Falcons, his most points in a game for the Brown and Orange.
"I was proud of the guys to keep it a 2-1 after the first period," BGSU coach Buddy Powers said. "We had two-on-one and three-on-four opportunities and we didn't take advantage of those situations. The only positive I can take is that we got three goals on Ryan Miller."
BGSU was outshot 42-24 for the game and were 1-for-3 on the power play. Michigan State was 2-for-6 on the power play.
The Falcons (1-4-2 overall, 1-3-1 in CCHA) face MSU again Friday night at 6:35 in Munn Ice Arena.
