ATHENS, Ohio - Senior Caty Rommeck had 22 kills, including the 1,000th of her Bowling Green State University tenure, as the Falcon volleyball team posted a win at Ohio Saturday night (Nov. 10). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Convocation Center.
The BGSU win (30-17, 30-23, 27-30, 30-13) extended the Falcons' win streak to a season-high six matches.
With the win, the Falcons are 18-6 overall and 11-5 in the MAC to remain in a tie for first in the East Division. Akron (17-6, 11-5) defeated Buffalo in four games to stay deadlocked with the Brown and Orange atop the division.
Rommeck, who leads the MAC in kills per game, had 22 kills and just six errors in 38 attempts (.421). She passed the 1,000-kill mark for her career midway through the second game and now has a total of 1,014 in her BGSU career. She is just the 10th BG player to reach the millennial mark. Rommeck, who played one year at Oakland University prior to transferring to BGSU, now has a collegiate total of 1,146 kills.
Rommeck helped lead a Falcon attack that finished the match with a season-best .337 hitting percentage. Bowling Green hit .606 with 20 kills and no errors in the fourth game, which it won handily.
BG's dominance was keyed by a combination of a strong offensive and defensive effort. The Falcons contained the Ohio offense with 11 blocks on the night while totaling 19 more digs than the host Bobcats (78-59). Five BG players finished with 10 or more digs for the match.
Trailing two games to none, Ohio fought back from the match deficit to take the third game. However, the Falcons responded in a big way in the decisive fourth game, streaking to leads of 8-0 and 18-3 en route to a.606 hitting percentage for the game, and the 30-13 win.
Rommeck, sophomore Susie Norris, senior Shyann Robinson and junior Kristin Gamby combined for 67 of BGSU's 78 kills on the night. Norris followed Rommeck's 22 kills with 17, while Robinson and Gamby had 15 and 13, respectively.
For Ohio, Smith led the way with 16 kills. Sophomores Lindsay Judice and Laura Hageman also finished in double figures with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Setter Michelle Gil registered 28 assists and 14 digs to lead the Bobcats.
Rommeck paced the Falcons in hitting percentage for the second time in as many nights, and had a double-double with her 22 kills and 14 digs.
Two other Falcons, Norris and Robinson, had double-double performances in the win. Norris recorded 17 kills and 15 digs, hitting .349, while Robinson had 15 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Sophomore Nadia Bedricky posted 12 digs off the bench.
Rommeck and sophomore Laura Twyman each had six total blocks, while Gamby had five. Senior setter Natalie Becker had two blocks, and led the team with 52 set assists and two service aces.
The Falcons have their final non-conference match Tuesday (Nov. 13), hosting Cleveland State University. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm in Anderson Arena. BG's final regular season conference road match is Friday (Nov. 16) at Kent State, before the Falcons return home to close the regular season against arch-rival Toledo.
