BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Caty Rommeck hammered 18 kills as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team posted a three-game sweep of Cleveland State University Tuesday evening. The Falcons beat the Vikings by scores of 30-15, 33-31 and 30-24 at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
With the victory, BGSU's season-high seventh in a row, the Falcons improve to 19-6 on the year. CSU dropped to 7-18.
Rommeck hit a match-high .405 on the evening, with the 18 kills and just three errors on 37 total attempts. Two other Falcons joined Rommeck in double digits in the kills department, as junior Kristin Gamby had 15 off the bench and sophomore Susie Norris had 11.
Norris was the lone Falcon in double figures in digs, with a match-best 15. Gamby hit .379 on the evening, and had three total blocks to tie for team honors. Freshman Melissa Mohr, making her first collegiate start, matched Gamby with three blocks. She entered the evening with four blocks on the season.
Senior setter Natalie Becker, who played the first two games, had 31 set assists. Sophomore Sara Sikorski had 10 assists in the third game.
The Falcons held CSU to a -.032 hitting percentage in the first game and a .129 average on the night. BGSU hit .269, and had 55 kills to the visitors' 33.
Michelle Iafigliola was the lone member of the Vikings in double digits with 11 kills, while Anne Yost paced CSU with 10 digs.
The Falcons now have a record of 18-4 in the month of November over the last three seasons. Overall, BGSU has a 61-27 slate since the beginning of the 1999 campaign.
The Falcons will return to MAC play this weekend, closing the regular season with a pair of matches. BGSU will travel to Kent State for a Friday (Nov. 16) contest, before returning home to end the regular-season schedule with a Saturday (Nov. 17) match against arch-rival Toledo. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
BGSU, currently tied with Akron for first place in the MAC's East Division (11-5 league record), has clinched a berth in the eight-team MAC Tournament. That tournament begins with quarterfinal matches at campus sites on Tuesday, Nov. 20. With one win this weekend, the Falcons will clinch a top-four seed and a homecourt berth for that quarterfinal round. One more win also would give BGSU a 20-win season for the third year in a row.
