ATHENS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University football team clinched a winning record with a 17-0 win at Ohio University Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10). The Mid-American Conference East Division game was held at Peden Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons move to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the MAC East. The game marked the team's last East Division contest, as BGSU will move to the MAC's West Division for the 2002 season. Ohio dropped to 1-8 and 0-5, respectively.
Shaun Suisham got the scoring started with a first-quarter field goal, and sophomore Josh Harris found senior Kurt Gerling on a four-yard touchdown pass with just 19 seconds remaining before halftime. That score came after BGSU had converted a fourth-down play inside the Bobcat 10-yard line.
Senior John Gibson's one-yard carry with six-and-a-half minutes left in the game provided the Falcons' final score.
The Falcons allowed the opposing team to gain over 100 yards rushing for just the second time this year, as the Bobcats had 105 yards on the ground. BGSU held the hosts to just 35 yards through the air, however.
BG had 21 first downs (14 rushing) to the Bobcats' eight, and the Falcons held a 400-140 advantage in total yards on the afternoon.
The Brown and Orange nearly doubled up the hosts in time of possession. BGSU had the ball for 39:03 to Ohio's 20:57.
Harris accounted for 304 of the Falcons' 400 yards. The sophomore had 148 yards rushing and 156 yards passing. He completed 13 of his 21 passing attempts on the day.
Senior Karl Rose had two interceptions in the win, the first multiple-INT game of his career. He now has three picks on the season and seven in his Falcon tenure.
BGSU has tripled last year's winning total. The Falcons went 2-9 in the 2000 campaign.
The Falcons have won three road games this season, and BGSU's defense has posted a pair of shutouts on the year.
BGSU steps outside of MAC play next Saturday (Nov. 17) with a game at Northwestern University. That contest begins at 11:00 a.m. local time (noon Eastern time) in Evanston, Ill. The Falcons then return home for a contest vs. arch-rival Toledo on Friday, Nov. 23. Kickoff for that game is 7:00 p.m. at Perry Stadium.
