BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Five Eastern Kentucky University players scored in double figures and the visiting Colonels shot 70 percent in the second half to down the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, 83-63, Tuesday night (Nov. 27). The non-conference game, the home opener for the Falcons, was played at Anderson Arena.
EKU is now 2-1, while BGSU fell to 1-4 on the young season.
EKU guard Teresa McNair scored a team-high 13 points, had six rebounds and contributed four steals for the visitors. A total of five Colonel players scored in double digits, as Miranda Eckerle came off the bench to score 12 points, while both Charlotte Sizemore and Katie Kelly had 11. For the hosts, junior Kim Griech had a game-high 14 points, while sophomore point guard Lindsay Austin scored in double digits for the third consecutive game. Austin had 12 points and three steals.
The Falcons played without a pair of starters. BGSU, already without Preseason All-MAC pick Francine Miller, learned late Tuesday afternoon that redshirt sophomore Pam Brown also would miss the game due to injury.
In addition to the scoring provided by Griech and Austin, the Falcons got nine points from senior Dana Western-Schuka. Western-Schuka also had a team-best five rebounds, and tied Austin in the steals department with three.
Sophomore Kelly Kapferer had seven points, while junior Karen Stocz scored six points off the bench. Junior Rachal Hamilton tied her career best with a four-point effort.
BGSU fell behind early, trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half. Down by a 28-12 count with 8:31 left before the intermission, the Brown and Orange held the Colonels without a field goal for the remainder of the half. BGSU went on a 14-1 run before an EKU free throw with five seconds left gave the visitors a 30-26 lead at the break.
In the second half, however, the Colonels scored the first eight points, sparking a 16-3 run over the first four minutes. When the smoke had cleared, EKU led by a 46-29 count, and the Falcons never cut the lead below 11 points thereafter.
The Colonels made their first six shots from the field in the second half, and made 21-of-30 shots in the second 20 minutes. EKU shot .492 for the game to the Falcons' .379.
The Brown and Orange forced 25 Colonel turnovers, but BGSU made 26 turnovers in the contest. EKU held a 46-37 advantage in the rebounding department.
BGSU will host IPFW on Thursday (Nov. 29) evening. That game, the Falcons' fourth in a seven-day stretch, is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson.
