Falcons Host Nebraska-Omaha
Bowling Green State University begins a two-week homestand with a two-game series this weekend against Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks are ranked 14th in the USA Today/American Hockey poll and 11th in the USCHO.com poll. UNO is tied for third in the CCHA standings.
BGSU versus the Mavericks
The Falcons trail the series 3-6-0 over the last two seasons since Nebraska-Omaha joined the CCHA in 1998. Of the nine matchups, seven have taken place in Omaha, Neb., while the Mavericks made their first trip to the BGSU Ice Arena last season. Bowling Green is 1-1-0 at home against UNO. In the nine matchups, only two games have been decided by more than two goals, including BGSU's 7-2 win at home last season. The other game was a 6-1 decision by the Mavericks on Jan. 3, 1999.
Bowling Green State University Head Coach Buddy Powers
Buddy Powers (Boston University '75) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Falcons. Powers has an overall record of 250-202-38 (.549 pct.) in 13 years as head coach at Bowling Green (1994-SA), Rensselaer (1989-94) and Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89). His record with the Brown and Orange stands at 130-131-23 (.498 pct.). Appointed the head coach at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994, Powers is the fourth head coach in the program's history. It is his 14th season overall on the Falcon bench after serving six years as assistant coach under Jerry York from 1982-88.
Falcons Face Tough Schedule
Six of the eight opponents Bowling Green has faced so far this season have been or are currently ranked among the top-15 in the country by the USA Today/American Hockey National Poll. Included in that list are current Top-15 members Michigan State (#3), Northern Michigan (#8) and Ohio State (#12). Those teams are a combined 25-8-4. Other teams that BGSU has faced that received votes this week are Maine and Miami.
Falcons & Powers Record Milestone Victories
With its 3-2 victory on Friday, Nov. 23, at Lake Superior, Bowling Green registered its 700th varsity victory in 32 years of hockey. Bowling Green's current overall record is 700-495-68 (.581 pct.). Also in the win, BGSU coach Buddy Powers recorded his 250th collegiate coaching victory in 13 years. Powers' current overall coaching record is 250-202-38 (.549 pct.) with stints at Rensselaer, Rochester Institute of Technology and Bowling Green. It was his 130th win as coach of the Falcons.
BGSU In Last Six Games
BGSU dropped just its second game in its last six contests with a 3-2 setback at Lake Superior on Saturday. In the last six games, Bowling Green is 3-2-1 and has averaged four goals per game with three games at home and three on the road.
Lakers Snap Bowling Green's Winning Streak
Lake Superior's 3-2 win over Bowling Green on Saturday snapped a six-game winning streak for the Falcons over the Lakers that dated back to Nov. 27, 1999.
Current Point Streaks
SO forward Roger Leonard is currently on a career-high four-game scoring streak for the Falcons. Leonard has recorded two goals and two assists in the last four games for BGSU after missing the first four games of the season due to a knee injury. SO defenseman Kevin Bieksa had a three-game scoring streak snapped on Nov. 23 at LSSU. Bieksa has five assists in the last six games, his total for the season. SR defenseman Grady Moore has his third two-game scoring streak of the season after an assist and goal in the LSSU series. His career longest is four games.
Day's Point Streak Ends
SR captain Greg Day had his season-high five-game scoring streak snapped on Nov. 24 at LSSU. Day had scored 4-3--7 in the previous five games. The forward's scoreless game was just his second this year against CCHA opponents while he has scored in 10 of his last 12 contests and 10 of BGSU's 14 games this year. In the four games he has not scored, the Falcons are 0-3-1. He currently is tied for the team lead in goals (six) and points (12).
