Falcons Return To the BGSU Ice Arena Bowling Green State University returns to the BGSU Ice Arena this weekend for a home Central Collegiate Hockey Association series against Miami University (OH). The Falcons are 1-1-0 so far this year at home while the Redhawks are 3-1-0 on the road.
BGSU versus Miami BGSU leads the all-time series 54-20-5 dating back to a 15-0 victory in their first meeting, Oct. 27, 1978. In BGSU Ice Arena the Falcons hold a sizeable 30-6-3 advantage against the Redhawks. Bowling Green lost both regular-season games last year to Miami at Goggin Ice Arena (4-2 and 9-3) but rebounded with two road victories in the first round of the CCHA Tournament in March (4-3 and 4-3 OT).
Bowling Green State University Head Coach Buddy Powers Buddy Powers (Boston University '75) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Falcons. Powers has an overall record of 247-200-37 (.549 pct.) in 13 years as head coach at Bowling Green (1994-SA), Rensselaer (1989-94) and Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89). His record with the Brown and Orange stands at 127-129-22 (.496 pct.). Appointed the head coach at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994, Powers is the fourth head coach in the program's history. It is his 14th season overall on the Falcon bench after serving six years as assistant coach under Jerry York from 1982-88.
Falcons Face Tough Schedule Three of the five opponents that Bowling Green has faced so far this season are ranked among the top-11 in the country this week by the USA Today/American Hockey National Poll. Included in that list is #4 Michigan State, #9 Northern Michigan and #11 Maine. The other two teams that have faced the Falcons are Clarkson and Ohio State, who received seven points in this week's poll. Combined, those five teams have a 17-10-5 record (.609 pct.). MSU, NMU and OSU are 1st, 2nd and T-3rd in this week's CCHA standings. As for upcoming opponent Miami (Nov. 9-10), they are #14 this week and also tied for third in the CCHA standings with an overall record of 5-2-1.
Sigalet Earns First Career Start FR goalie Jordan Sigalet received his first collegiate start in the net on Friday, Nov. 2, at #4 Michigan State. Sigalet ended the game with 28 saves in 59:54 of action and allowed four goals, including one power play goal. The freshman also appeared in Thursday's game against MSU, making 12 saves and allowing no goals in the final 12:05. For the weekend, Sigalet allowed four goals in just under 72 minutes of action (71:59) for a 3.33 gaa, and posted 40 saves (.909 pct.).
White Scores First Career Points at Michigan State FR Denis White recorded his first and second points as a Falcon on Nov. 1 at Michigan State. White assisted on two goals for Bowling Green in a 6-3 loss against the Spartans. He is the third freshman to notch his first career point so far for the Falcons.
Point/Goal Streaks Come to An End SR forward Greg Day's point streak came to an end in BGSU's 4-0 loss at Michigan State on Nov. 2. He had scored a point in five-straight games (2-3--5). Meanwhile, FR Ryan Minnabarriet scored a goal in three-consecutive games from Oct. 20-27 at Northern Michigan and one each against Ohio State. His streak ended last week at Michigan State (Nov. 1) when he was held scoreless. His three goals lead the Falcon team.
Moore Is Better On Power Plays SR defenseman Grady Moore has made a living off of the power play during his career in the Brown and Orange. Of his 17 goals over the last four years, 12 have come on the power play. And so far this season, three of his four assists have come on the power play, as well.
Greg Days Scores 100th Point SR captain Greg Day recorded his 100th career point at Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 26, with an assist on Marc Barlow's goal in the first period of a 5-3 win against OSU. His 100th point (44 goals, 56 assists) came in his 120th consecutive game played for the Falcons. He currently has five points this season (2-3--5) and 102 for his career (45-57--102). Day is the 76th player all-time to reach the 100-point club at BGSU.
Spreading the Wealth Eleven different Falcons have scored goals in the first eight games of the season, including six of the seven senior forwards and defensemen. Four players have two goals while FR Ryan Minnabarriet leads the team with three netters.
Not Over Til It's Over BGSU dropped its second game of the young season in the final 30 seconds with a 4-3 loss to Ohio State on Oct. 27. OSU's JB Bittner found the back of the net with just 27 seconds remaining to hand the Falcons the loss. BGSU had just tied the game 21 seconds earlier with a goal by Brian Escobedo. The other loss was a 2-1 setback at Northern Michigan on Oct. 19 when the Wildcats scored with only 13 seconds left.
Michigan State Series (Nov. 1-2) No. 4-ranked Michigan State swept Bowling Green last weekend at Munn Ice Arena, 6-3 and 4-0. The 4-0 loss was the first shutout of the Falcons since Feb. 17 of last season against Ferris State (3-0 loss). In the 6-3 defeat, SR defenseman Grady Moore scored a career-high three points (1-2--3) by having a hand in each of the three goals scored. FR Jordan Sigalet earned his first collegiate start in the net on Nov. 2, finishing with 28 saves and allowing four goals.
Ohio State Series (Oct. 26-27) Bowling Green picked up its first victory of the season against Ohio State in the home opener for the Falcons, 5-3. Five different players scored for BGSU in the victory while goalie Tyler Masters had 31 saves in the net. The Buckeyes tripped up BGSU the next night with a goal at 19:33 to break a 3-3 tie. SO Brian Escobedo had just tied the game 21 seconds earlier for Bowling Green. In the two games, four different Falcons scored their first goals of the season including Marc Barlow, Scott Hewson, Ryan Wetterberg and Austin de Luis.
Northern Michigan Series (Oct. 19-20) Bowling Green finished 0-1-1 at Northern Michigan Oct. 19-20. It was the second-consecutive road trip for the Falcons to begin the 2001-2002 season. BGSU lost 2-1 Oct. 19 when NMU's Chad Theuer scored with just over 13 seconds remaining in the third period for a Wildcat victory. SR Greg Day scored the lone goal for the Brown & Orange, and his first of the season. On Oct. 20, FR Ryan Minnabarriet scored his first collegiate goal to knot the score 2-2 at 16:24 of the second period. Facing a 3-2 deficit in the third period, FR Colen Pappas notched his first netter at BGSU to tie the score at 3-3. JR Tyler Masters had 36 saves in the Oct. 20 game and was voted Perani Cup Player of the Game.
Ice Breaker Cup (Oct. 12-13) Bowling Green began its 2001-2002 campaign by travelling to Orono, Maine, for the Ice Breaker Cup at the University of Maine. BGSU lost to #8 Maine on Oct. 12, 9-1. SO defenseman Brian Escobedo scored Bowling Green's lone goal at 18:41 of the second period. Mark Wires and Tyler Knight assisted on the goal. On Oct. 13, BGSU rebounded with a 1-1 tie against #13 Clarkson and earned a third-place finish via a shootout. SO forward D'Arcy McConvey scored both the regulation goal at 16:37 of the third period and the shootout goal. Masters Sets New Career Mark JR goalie Tyler Masters recorded a career-high 51 saves on Oct. 13 against #13 Clarkson at the Ice Breaker Cup, in addition to seven shootout saves. The game finished in a 1-1 tie after Masters knocked away 51 of 52 shots attempted by the Knights. His 51 saves were four shy of BGSU's school record of 55 set by Al Sarachman on Dec. 8, 1974 against Michigan State. In two games at the Ice Breaker, Masters finished with 76 saves.

2001-2002 Captains This year's team captain is senior forward Greg Day. The assistant captains are seniors Marc Barlow and Scott Hewson. Combined, the three players have played in 339 games, and scored over 71 goals and over 200 points in the last three years. Day has not missed a single game since he arrived in Bowling Green, appearing in 123-straight games.
Assistant Coaches Head Coach Buddy Powers is assisted this season by Dave Smith (Ohio State '92) and Tim Alexander (Bowling Green '80). Smith is in his second season at Bowling Green while this is Alexander's first year on the bench for his alma mater. Dan St. Jean serves as volunteer coach and is in his fourth season with the Falcons.
Bieksa and Sigalet Drafted This past summer, SO defenseman Kevin Bieksa and FR goalie Jordan Sigalet were selected in the 2001 National Hockey League draft. Bieksa was drafted in the 5th round by the Vancouver Canucks as their 4th pick in the draft. Sigalet was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 7th round as their sixth overall pick.
