CONWAY, S.C. - Sophomore Libby Voshell homered twice as the Bowling Green State University softball team recorded a 9-0 victory over the University of Illinois Monday morning (March 12). The game was the opener of the Coastal Carolina Classic.
The Falcons improve to 3-3 with the victory, while Illinois drops to 13-7 on the season.
Voshell, who had three round-trippers during her entire freshman season, drove in five runs in the victory, which was halted after six innings due to the "mercy" rule.
Voshell is believed to be the first Falcon in school history to homer twice in the same game.
Voshell's former high-school teammate, junior Jessie Milosek, threw a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits. The Brighton, Mich., native walked just two batters and struck out four en route to her second complete game of the season. Milosek improved to 2-1.
Milosek's toughest inning may have been the first. After the Falcons went down in order in the top of the frame, Illinois drew back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a fielder's choice produced an out, an Illini single loaded the bases. But, Milosek struck out the next batter, and a bunt by the next hitter resulted in an out at first to end the threat.
The Falcons got on the board in the second, on Voshell's first homer of the day. The two-out blast to left field scored senior Nikki Rouhana, who had doubled.
BGSU added a run in the third, when junior Holly Frantz led off with a single, took second on a sac bunt by senior Angie Domschot, and came around to score on a throwing error by the UI second baseman.
The Falcons scored twice more in the fourth. Junior Renee Rosemeier led off with a double, chasing Illini starting pitcher Kathryn Nevard. Nevard dropped to 8-4 on the year with the loss.
UI reliever Amanda Fortune got the next two hitters out, but Voshell hit her second two-out, two-run homer of the day, with this shot again going to left field.
BGSU broke the game wide open in the sixth. Rosemeier led off with a walk, and was replaced by pinch-runner Candace Fenton. Rouhana and senior Lynsey Ebel each walked to load the bases, and Voshell was hit by a pitch to plate Fenton.
After an Illinois pitching change, sophomore Crystal Wilson got the first of three consecutive run-scoring singles, hitting a ball through the right side. Frantz got her third hit of the day, the first three-hit game of her career, and Angie Domschot also singled to score Voshell.
The Illinois could not score in the bottom of the sixth, ending the contest. BGSU got a total of nine hits in the game, with six of those hits coming from the bottom third of the order -- Voshell, Wilson and Frantz. Those three players combined for seven of the team's eight RBI.
In addition to homers, Voshell set personal single-game bests in runs scored (three) and RBI (five). She went 2-for-2 and reached base in all three plate appearances. Frantz was 3-for-3 in the win.
The Falcons will continue action at the CCU Classic with a game against host Coastal Carolina later Monday.
