CONWAY, S.C. - The Bowling Green State University softball team won for the third-straight game, and for the second time on Monday (March 12), recording a 6-2 victory over host Coastal Carolina. The game was part of the CCU Classic.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 4-3 on the year, while CCU, the defending Big South Conference regular-season and tournament champion, falls to 5-5 on the season.
The Brown and Orange got on the board first, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, freshman Jenifer Kernahan was hit by a pitch from the Lady Chanticleers' Stephanie Belden. Kernahan advanced to second on a wild pitch, and, after a walk to senior Jen Domschot, both runners moved up on another wild pitch. Junior Renee Rosemeier walked to load the bases, but senior Nikki Rouhana grounded to third, and the CCU third baseman threw home to force Kernahan at the plate.
With two outs, however, senior Lynsey Ebel got the only hit of the inning, singling to center to plate both Rosemeier and Domschot.
In the game, the hosts outhit the Falcons by a 10-5 margin.
BGSU got another run in the third inning, as Jen Domschot had a leadoff single, took second on a passed ball and scored on Rosemeier's third double of the season (and second of the day).
Falcon sophomore pitcher McKenna Houle stymied a CCU threat in the fourth, getting the final out of the frame with runners on second and third. The Lady Chants, however, broke through in the fifth, using three singles and a sacrifice bunt.
BGSU came right back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Jess Jenkins led off with a pinch-hit walk, and senior Angie Domschot was reinserted into the lineup at first base. Domschot took second on a wild pitch, and went to third when Kernahan reached base on an error. After a groundout, another wild pitch allowed Domschot to cross the plate, and Kernahan took third.
Then, Rosemeier walked, and Rouhana reached on an error, allowing Kernahan to score. Ebel reached on a fielder's choice, with pinch-runner Kandice Machain scoring the Falcons' final run of the game. BGSU's three runs in the frame came without the benefit of a hit.
CCU scored a run in the sixth off freshman Jody Johnson, but could do no more damage.
Houle got the win to improve to 1-2 on the season. She allowed eight hits, but just one run, in her five innings of work. Johnson surrendered one run and two hits in her two innings.
CCU's Belden allowed just three earned runs in her complete-game effort, but she walked four batters and threw four wild pitches in the game. She falls to 2-4 on the year.
At the plate, five different Falcons had hits, but Ebel had three of the team's five RBI. Jen Domschot scored a pair of runs.
Defensively, first baseman Rouhana had 13 of BGSU's 21 putouts in the win.
The Falcons will return to action at the CCU Classic with a Tuesday (March 13) game vs. East Carolina University at 2:00 p.m. BGSU also plays the University of Virginia that evening at 7:00 p.m.
