CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A run in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Penn State University to a 4-3 victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team Friday (March 23). The game was the first for both teams in the Who's Hoo Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia, at The Park.
The game was tied twice before the Nittany Lions, now 14-7 on the year, scored what would prove to be the winning marker. BGSU drops to 7-8 with the loss.
PSU took the lead on a BGSU error in the first inning, and scored another run in the third. Megan Humphrey's two-out homer off Falcon junior Andrea Genter in that third frame gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Brown and Orange tied the score with a pair of runs in the fourth. With one out, sophomore Kandice Machain drew a walk and moved to second on a single by senior Jen Domschot. Junior Renee Rosemeier grounded out, moving the runners to second and third, before senior Nikki Rouhana came through with a two-out hit. Her single to left-center plated both runners.
PSU took the lead in the fifth, scoring a run on a bunt single that was followed by a Jennifer Tripken double, but the Falcons tied the game once again in the sixth.
In that inning, the first two BG batters were retired before the Falcons did any damage. Jen Domschot, who had two of the team's four hits in the game, singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. From there, she came home on Rosemeier's team-leading fifth double of the year.
In the bottom of the sixth, however, the Lions got the winning run on a single, a sacrifice bunt and a pinch-hit RBI single by Jenny Briz. The Falcons could not put together a rally in the seventh.
PSU's Kelly McCann got the win with a complete-game four-hitter. She had a no-hitter for three-and-a-third innings. In the game, she walked one batter and struck out four.
For the Falcons, Genter took the loss for the first time in her four decisions this season. She gave up eight hits and three earned runs in her complete-game effort.
The teams were scheduled to meet for a second time later Friday afternoon.
