BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team used a 14-hit attack to post a 9-1 win over the University of Toledo Tuesday (March 27). The game, the second half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the "mercy" rule.
Senior Lynsey Ebel had a three-run homer, and classmate Angie Domschot and sophomore Kandice Machain each had three hits in the win, with Domschot becoming BGSU's all-time leader in triples. Sophomore McKenna Houle got the win with a complete-game four-hitter.
The Falcons struck for two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Senior Nikki Rouhana led off the first with a single, and took second on a passed ball. One out later, senior Jen Domschot tripled to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run.
After the second BG out, senior Angie Domschot tripled to score her sister. Angie Domschot's triple was her second of the year and the 18th of her BGSU career, setting a new school record. She surpassed Amy Lienhardt, who had 17 from 1985-88.
The two triples vs. Toledo marked the second time in a three-day span that the Domschot twins hit triples in the same inning, as they turned the trick in Sunday's (April 25) 9-0 win over Liberty.
In the second inning, sophomore Libby Voshell led off with an infield hit, and took third on a one-out single by classmate Kandice Machain. Machain went 3-for-3 in the game, for the second three-hit contest of her Falcon career.
With the runners on second and third, Rouhana hit a two-run double to center to score both sophomores and chase UT starting pitcher Tracy Riepenhoff. Junior Holly Frantz greeted reliever Cortney Winslow with a single, as Rouhana took third. Jen Domschot's sacrifice fly scored Rouhana to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead.
Houle allowed the only UT run of the game in the fourth, as Laurie Linton walked and eventually scored on a two-out double by Jenny Schaaf.
BGSU scored three more times in the fifth inning, with Ebel's bat doing the damage. Junior Renee Rosemeier reached on an infield single, and pinch-runner Jody Johnson then took second on a wild pitch. Senior Angie Domschot singled to move Johnson to third, and Domschot then stole second. Ebel then came to the plate and clubbed a three-run homer to left to give BG an 8-1 lead.
For Ebel, the homer was the 10th of her career. She moves into a tie for second place on the BGSU career list along with fellow senior Jen Domschot. Colleen Bates (1997-2000) holds the school record with 11.
The Falcons ended the game with an unearned run in the sixth inning. Frantz hit a nubber that the UT catcher fielded. But, her throw to first was high, and Frantz ended up on second. Wit two outs and Frantz on third, Angie Domschot singled to give the Falcons an eight-run lead and end the game.
In addition to the three-hit performances by Machain and Angie Domschot, Rouhana had two hits for the second time on Tuesday. Voshell also had two hits as BG outhit UT by a 14-4 margin.
Ebel, of course, had three RBI, while the team's other three seniors had two apiece. Rouhana was the lone Falcon to score two runs.
Houle got the win with her complete-game four-hitter. She threw just 56 pitches in her six innings, walking one batter and striking out four. For UT, Riepenhoff took the loss, allowing five runs in an inning and a third. Winslow allowed four runs (three earned) in her four-and-a-third innings of relief.
The Falcons' Wednesday (March 28) doubleheader at Cleveland State University has been postponed, as CSU's Viking Field was covered with several inches of snow as of Tuesday. Those games have been rescheduled for Thursday, April 12, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Cleveland.
So, the Brown and Orange will return to action with a weekend series at Marshall University. In a change from the original schedule, Friday's (March 30) single game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at MU's Dot Hicks Softball Field, with Saturday's (March 31) twinbill commencing at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons and Thundering Herd tied for the MAC's East Division title a year ago.
