BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Jessie Milosek threw a complete-game five-hitter, and the Bowling Green State University softball team scored three times in the first inning en route to a 6-2 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy. The contest, the first game of a Monday (April 16) doubleheader, was held at the BGSU Softball Field.
The win improved the Falcons' record to 18-14, while UDM dropped to 12-20.
The Brown and Orange got all the runs Milosek would need in the first inning, scoring three times after the first two batters were retired. Senior Jen Domschot got things started with a hard-hit ball that caromed off Detroit pitcher Bridget Teisl. Domschot reached base with a single. Then, after she stole second, she was safe at third on junior Renee Rosemeier's fielder's choice. Rosemeier's grounder was fielded by the UDM shortstop, who threw too late in an attempt to get Domschot at third base.
Senior Angie Domschot came to the plate and hit a triple over the rightfielder's head to clear the bases. For Domschot, the triple was the 19th of her BGSU career, extending her own school record.
Senior Lynsey Ebel came to bat, and hit a double to right-center to score Angie Domschot. Sophomore Libby Voshell followed with a sharp single, but Ebel was out at the plate to end the inning. Still, the Falcons led by three after one inning.
BGSU wasted no time in adding to that lead. Junior Natalie Phillips, making just her fourth start and seventh at-bat of the season, led off with a single. Junior Holly Frantz was safe on a fielder's choice, and Phillips was safe when the Titan shortstop's toss to second base went awry. Phillips advanced to third on the play. The next batter, senior Nikki Rouhana, hit into a double play, but Phillips scored.
Neither team scored until the sixth inning, when the Titans got on the board. With two outs, Laura Gignac singled and came around to score on Devon Brisky's double.
The Falcons got two runs in the bottom of the inning. Jen Domschot led off with a walk, and Rosemeier followed with a single. Angie Domschot grounded out to the right side of the infield, enabling both baserunners to advance. Then, freshman Jody Johnson reached base on a Titan error, with Jen Domschot scoring and Rosemeier taking third. Rosemeier would come in to score on a Voshell single.
Detroit threatened in the seventh, sending seven batters to the plate. Steph Strauss reached on an error, and Steph Mordus reached on a fielder's choice as Strauss beat the throw to second. Nichole Taucher singled to score pinch-runner Raina Dailey and send another pinch-runner, Connie Angeles, to second.
The Falcons got the first out of the inning when Milosek induced Melanie Davis to hit a grounder back to the pitcher's circle. Milosek threw to third to force Angeles. A wild pitch, though, allowed both runners to move up one base, and Andrea Sikora reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and bring the potential game-tying run to the plate.
That batter was Krista Peters, the Titan's leading hitter, but Milosek got her to hit a grounder to Voshell at short. Voshell's throw home forced Taucher at the plate. Then, Gignac grounded to third to end the game.
Milosek went all the way for the win, allowing just one unearned run and the five hits. She struck out two batters and did not issue a walk in improving her record to 6-5.
For the Titans, Teisl threw a complete game. She allowed seven hits and six runs (four earned) in her six innings. Teisl walked one batter and fanned one, but saw her record fall to 7-4 on the year.
The Falcons held a 7-5 advantage in the hits department, with Voshell getting two hits to lead all players. Angie Domschot was the only player to drive in two runs, while both Jen Domschot and Rosemeier scored twice in the game.
The teams were scheduled to return to the field for the second game of the twinbill.
