Men's Tennis Loses At WMU, 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan University opened its Mid-American Conference schedule with a tough 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team Saturday.
The Broncos even their record at 9-9 with the win, while the Falcons fall to 12-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.
WMU opened the afternoon by taking all three doubles matches. Ryan Tomlinson and Ryan Maarschalk downed senior Brandon Gabel and sophomore Geoff Hiscox in the top-flight match. Steve Pillon and Ravishankar Pathanjali, now 7-0 as a team this year, had an 8-3 win over sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo and junior Vitek Wild at the number-two flight, and WMU's Christian Brattstrom and Fernando Garcia rounded out doubles play with an 8-4 win over sophomore Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and freshman Nick Moxley.
In singles play, the Falcons got wins at the top-two flights. Hiscox downed Garcia in straight sets at the top flight, with Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo doing the same vs. Tomlinson at the second level. But, the Broncos captured each of the other four matches to take the win.
At the third flight, WMU's Pillon pulled out a marathon win over junior Mike Kossoff. Kossoff took the opening set with a 16-14 tiebreaker win, but Pillon won the second set. In the third set, Pillon broke Kossoff's serve to take a 3-2 lead, only to see Kossoff win the next three games. Pillon again broke serve to cut the lead to 5-4, and both players held serve until the tiebreaker.
The Falcons now prepare for the team's first home match since Feb. 24. BGSU begins a six-match homestand with a Saturday (April 7) MAC match vs. arch-rival Toledo. Start time is 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts. On Sunday (April 8), the Falcons will play both Robert Morris (10:00 a.m.) and Cleveland State (2:30 p.m.).
