Saturday night the Falcon Hockey team held their annual banquet at Olscamp Hall and two players shared the Jim Sears Award, given to the team's most valuable player. Junior forward Greg Day (St. Clair Beach, ON, Chatham Maroons) and sophomore netminder Tyler Masters (Calgary, Alberta, Kindersley Klippers) were both honored. Day lead the team with 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 40 games. As the team's leading scorer, Day was also awarded the Sam Cooper Trophy. Masters set school records for single season save percentage (.922) and shutouts (3) and placed second on the all-time list in single season goals against average (2.47). The Jim Ruehl Award for best defensive player was also given to Masters for his record-breaking season.
Senior forward Curtis Valentine (Gansevoort, NY, Capital District Selects) received the Jack Gregory (scholar-athlete) Award. Valentine was named to the CCHA-All Academic First Team for the first time during his senior season. Valentine played in all 40 games for the Falcons this season, scoring nine goals and seven assists for 16 points.
The Bill & Helen Lloyd Award for most improved player went to junior goaltender Jason Gural (San Jose, CA, BGSU Club Team). This was Gural's first year on the varsity squad, having previously played two seasons for BGSU's club team.
For the second consecutive year, senior blueliner Doug Schueller (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Twin Cities Vulcans) took home the Rink Rat Award as fan favorite. Schueller also received the Dr. Ron Zwierlein Leadership Award. Schueller returned to the lineup on November 3 after off-season knee surgery. He had eight points in 33 games this season, with a +1 rating.
Paul Yutzy was bestowed the Dr. Tom Wojciechowski Recognition Award for his distinguished service to the program.
Falcon Head coach Buddy Powers announced that next season's captain will be Greg Day, with Marc Barlow and Scott Hewson serving as assistant captians.
