BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team exploded for nine first-inning runs en route to a 13-2 victory over Miami University Saturday afternoon (April 28). The game, the first half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the BGSU Softball Field, lasted four-and-a-half innings.
Miami actually threatened to take the lead in the top of the first, putting runners at second and third with one out. But, BGSU junior hurler Andrea Genter struck out both Angie Gerber and Nicki Pelfrey to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, the Brown and Orange sent 13 runners to the plate. Senior Nikki Rouhana began the inning with a single, and classmate Jen Domschot doubled with one out, sending Rouhana to third. Junior Renee Rosemeier drew a walk to load the bases, and senior Angie Domschot was hit by an Amber Arnold pitch to score Rouhana with the game's first run. But, the Falcons were just getting started.
Senior Lynsey Ebel came to the plate and drilled a bases-clearing line-drive double to left. Sophomore Libby Voshell followed with a double of her own which scored Ebel and chased Arnold.
Arnold's twin sister, Abbey, came on and got a grounder for the second out. She walked junior Holly Frantz before striking out Rouhana for what would have been the third out. But, Rouhana reached on a passed ball to keep the inning alive.
Sophomore Kandice Machain then drew a walk to bring Voshell across the plate. Then, Jen Domschot, who had already doubled in the inning, hit a three-run triple to complete the nine-run inning.
The first inning took 42 minutes to complete.
The RedHawks scored a pair of runs off Genter in the third. Jamie Carey and Kristina Mortaloni drew walks to start the inning, and Gerber doubled to score Carey. One out later, Erin Kucera's single plated Mortaloni. But, the visitors would get no closer.
BGSU answered right away, with four runs in the bottom of the third. Rouhana again got things started, drawing a leadoff walk. Machain hit the first pitch she saw for a triple to the wall in right-center, scoring Rouhana. Jen Domschot walked before Rosemeier's sacrifice fly plated Machain.
Then, Ebel blasted a two-run homer to left. The round-tripper was her fourth of the year and the 12th of her career, tying the school's career record. That mark is also held by Jen Domschot. Ebel's homer was caught on the fly by Jim Shaw, husband of BGSU coach Leigh Ross-Shaw, beyond the left-field fence.
Junior Jessie Milosek came on in relief of Genter and held the RedHawks scoreless in the final two innings.
Genter earned the win to improve to 6-2 on the season. She allowed two runs and three hits in her three innings of work. Genter did issue five walks, but struck out three batters.
Milosek had five strikeouts in her two innings, striking out the side in the fifth frame. She hit a pair of batters with pitches, but did not walk a batter.
Amber Arnold took the loss, falling to 10-12. She allowed six runs (five earned) in one-third of an inning. She allowed four hits, walked one batter and hit one with a pitch.
Abbey Arnold allowed seven runs, with four earned, in her three-and-two-thirds innings of action. She gave up three hits, walked six batters and fanned three.
The Falcons had just seven hits in the game, but six were for extra bases, including three doubles, two triples and Ebel's homer.
Jen Domschot was 2-for-2 with a walk, a pair of runs scored and three RBI, while Ebel was 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI. Rouhana scored three runs while Machain drove in two.
The teams were scheduled to return to the diamond for Saturday's second game.
