BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Jen Domschot's infield single broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 5-3 win over Miami University Saturday (April 28). The win gave the Falcons a sweep of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the BGSU Softball Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 29-16 overall and 16-4 in Mid-American Conference play. BGSU leads second-place Kent State (13-6) by two-and-a-half games in the MAC's East Division race, heading into the final week of the regular season.
Miami falls to 16-33 overall and 6-15 in the league.
The visiting RedHawks opened the scoring with a run off freshman Jody Johnson in the top of the first inning. Jamie Carey, who scored all three MU runs in the game, drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Kristina Mortaloni's sacrifice. Carey then scored on a single by Angie Gerber.
The RedHawks doubled the lead in the third. Carey again drew a base on balls. Again, Mortaloni sacrificed her to second. On the play, however, Carey tried for third when she realized that no one was covering the base. A hurried BG throw skipped away as Carey continued home.
The Falcons erased the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three times. MU pitcher Amber Arnold, who had allowed one hit in the first three frames, was replaced by her sister, Abbey Arnold, to start the fourth.
Sophomore Kandice Machain led off that inning with an opposite-field double to left-center. She came around to score when the next batter, senior Jen Domschot, singled up the middle. Domschot took second base on the throw home.
Arnold then retired the next two batters before senior Lynsey Ebel stepped to the plate. Ebel crushed an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left-centerfield, just below the scoreboard, to give the Falcons the lead, 3-2.
For Ebel, the homer was her second of the afternoon, her fifth on the season and the 13th of her career. She now owns the school's career record, breaking the mark of 12 that she had shared with Jen Domschot. Ebel had hit her 12th in the third inning of Saturday's first game, a 13-2 Falcon win.
The RedHawks, though, would not go away without a fight. Keri Brisnehan led off the fifth inning with a single, and was erased at second on Carey's fielder's choice. Carey then stole second base, and came around to score on a two-out single by Gerber.
The next batter, Nicki Pelfrey, hit a ball into the gap in left-center. BG centerfielder Jen Domschot threw to her sister, second baseman Angie Domschot, whose relay to sophomore Jenifer Kernahan at the plate cut down Gerber trying to score.
In the bottom of the frame, the Falcons scored the winning run and got some insurance with a two-out rally. After the first two batters were retired, senior Nikki Rouhana hit a double to right-center. Machain hit a hard single to left, which advanced Rouhana to third, and Machain took second base as the RedHawks threw home in an attempt to prevent Rouhana from advancing further.
Jen Domschot then came to bat, and hit a slow roller to second base on a 2-2 pitch. Domschot beat the throw as Rouhana scored, and the throw to first skipped into foul territory, allowing Machain to cross the plate as well.
BG junior Jessie Milosek came on in relief of Johnson and retired all six batters she faced to earn her first save of the season. Milosek induced a popup and two infield grounders in the sixth, then struck out the side in the seventh.
With the win, Johnson improved to 4-0 on the week and 7-2 on the season. She allowed just one earned run and six hits in her five innings of work, walking four batters and striking out five.
Amber and Abbey Arnold pitched three innings apiece, with Abbey taking the loss to drop to 6-21 on the year. Amber allowed just one hit and no runs, walking a batter and striking out a batter. Abbey gave up six hits and five runs (four earned). She had one strikeout and did not walk a BG batter.
The Falcons outhit the RedHawks, 7-6, with Machain and Jen Domschot getting two hits apiece. Ebel and Jen Domschot had two RBI each, with Ebel improving her total to seven on the day and a team-high 31 on the season.
Machain scored two runs in the game and four on the afternoon.
Brisnehan and Gerber each had a pair of hits for the visitors, with Gerber driving in two runs.
The Falcons have now won the last seven home games vs. Miami, and the Falcons have captured 19 of the teams' last 20 contests at the BGSU Softball Field.
The win improved BGSU's record to 13-0 against MAC East Division teams this season.
BGSU will open the final week of regular-season play with Monday's (April 30) non-league doubleheader at Cleveland State. Game one is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
Then, the Falcons will return home for a single game vs. Toledo Tuesday (May 1), beginning at 4:00 p.m. BGSU will host Kent State for a three-game series to end the regular season, with the teams playing a single game Friday (May 4) and a Saturday twinbill (May 5).
