Ann Arbor, Michigan - Bowling Green (14-8) fell to the University of Michigan (11-12) this afternoon as the Falcons were just out-hit and out-pitched in this final meeting of the season between the two teams. The previous meeting was on 3/27 in a much closer victory as Michigan edged the Falcons in the last inning to pick up the victory.
Bowling Green scored four runs on only five hits in the contest, one run coming in the 1st as senior CF Aric Christman scored off of a groundout by freshman LF Neil Schmitz to put the first run up on the board for the Falcons. Michigan would have a big first inning, however, and scored five, causing the Falcons to reach into their relief pitching reserve already as sophomore starting RHP Brett Baumgartner was taken out.
Bowling Green would fight back in the 2nd however, and scored two more. Junior SS Nick Elrod and senior 3B Scott Dukate would collect a run each in the inning, and junior 2B Nick Schmidt would also add to the inning, connecting with an RBI single to right field (scoring Dukate). The only other Falcon run of the day came in the 4th inning when junior C Tim Newell smacked his third home run of the season, a solo shot.
Michigan's starting pitcher, Tim Leveque (4IP, 4H, 4ER) collected the win, however it was the Michigan relief pitching that really sealed the victory. Relievers Bobby Wood and Jeff Trzos collectively held the Falcons to one hit and zero runs in five innings. Many Wolverine hitters also had big days, as Nate Wright went 4-5 with 5 RBI and Brock Koman went 2-3 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. The team combined to score their 16 runs off of 16 hits.
Bowling Green will return home tommorow to face non-conference opponent Detroit-Mercy. The game will begin at 3:00pm at home site Steller Field.
