Weekends mean sporting events for Scott and Mary Sehmann. Normally, their work schedules take them miles from each other on a Saturday.
Mary is the Wood County Special Olympics Coordinator. Her Special Olympics athletes train and compete in track and field, bocce, cycling, and volleyball in the spring.
Scott is the head women's track coach at BGSU. Every weekend means a home or away track meet with his university team. But this Saturday will be different. This couple, who met at the University of South Dakota track at a practice in 1985, will be able to share a day together at the Area Special Olympics Spring Games at the University of Toledo.
Mary will have 86 Wood County Special Olympics athletes competing in track and field, bocce and volleyball while Scott and 20 of his women track athletes from BGSU, will be volunteering with Wood County Special Olympics for the day.
"With a record number of Special Olympics athletes competing we really needed additional help," explained (Mary) Sehmann. "The BGSU women's track team and the football team are helping us this weekend." The BGSU football team will have 10 players volunteering that day also.
"I'm looking forward to Scott being at the event and helping," added (Mary) Sehmann. "He has experience with events and can help cheer athletes on and also troubleshoot when needed.
While the Sehmann family is especially busy in the spring, they make the time that they have true "quality" time. "We are both very fortunate to have flexibility within our jobs," stated (Mary) Sehmann. "We are not able to see each other a great deal during season. We spend our together time with our daughters, Marissa (6) and Emmy (3) in the evening and then after their bedtime, Scott is usually on the phone with recruits."
Scott and Mary have always had a love of sport and since being in Bowling Green, a true love of Special Olympics. Mary added, "Scott served as a volunteer coach from 1992 - 1995. On our (third) anniversary, we spent it at a Special Olympics softball game. He enjoys, as I do, being with the athletes, families and volunteers."
And on Saturday, they both will have that opportunity - together.
