Bowling Green - Bowling Green State University and hockey coach Buddy Powers officially announced the 2001-02 Falcon schedule today, highlighted by tournaments in Maine and Colorado, along with 28 contests against Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) opponents and 10 non-conference matchups.
BGSU begins its season at the Icebreakers Tournament hosted by the University of Maine (Oct. 12-13). The Falcons meet the Black Bears in the first game on Friday, Oct. 12, to begin the season. Also in the Icebreaker tourney are Clarkson and St. Cloud.
The other tournament on the Falcons' schedule is a trip west to Denver, Colo., to participate in the Wells Fargo Denver Cup, hosted by the University of Denver (Dec. 28-29). Also participating are Harvard and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. BGSU plays host Denver on Dec. 28.
The Falcons open CCHA play in the second week of the season when they travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to take on Northern Michigan (Oct. 19-20). The following week is when Bowling Green opens home action at the BGSU Ice Arena against CCHA and in-state foe Ohio State (Oct. 26-27). It will mark the lone weekend that BGSU plays the Buckeyes in 2001-02.
Besides the two tournaments, BGSU will take on non-conference opponents Wayne State (Nov. 16-17), Princeton (Jan. 4-5) and Rensselaer (Jan. 18-19). The Nov. 16 game against Wayne State and the Princeton series will be at the BGSU Ice Arena, while the Falcons travel to Detroit on Nov. 17 and then to Rensselaer, Jan. 18-19.
BGSU (16-19-5) ended the 2000-01 season by advancing to the CCHA Final Four after rattling off five-consecutive victories. The Falcons fell in the first round to the No.1-ranked Spartans of Michigan State, 2-1, at Joe Louis Arena.
