Bowling Green - Bowling Green State University baseball coach Danny Schmitz announced today the addition of two local talents to his coaching staff for the upcoming season. Former major-leaguer Chris Hoiles and former BGSU Falcon Dave Whitmire will be joining Schmitz' staff for the 2002 baseball season.
Hoiles was an All-MAC player at Eastern Michigan University and lettered from 1984-86 for the Eagles. He was drafted in the 19th round by the Detroit Tigers in 1986 and traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 1988, where he made his major league debut for the Orioles in 1989. Hoiles was a catcher for 10 seasons in Baltimore and was voted the Most Valuable Oriole in 1993 after batting .310 with 29 homers and 82 RBIs. Hoiles retired in 1999 and has been involved in personal business the last two years. He was born in Bowling Green and currently resides in nearby Wayne, Ohio. Hoiles is a volunteer coach who will work with catchers and hitters.
"With his experience, especially on the professional level, it is a tremendous advantage for us," BGSU coach Danny Schmitz said about the addition of Hoiles. "We're happy he wanted to join our baseball family."
Also joining the BGSU coaching ranks is 1994 BGSU graduate Dave Whitmire. Whitmire was a member of the Falcon baseball team from 1989-91. He has been an assistant baseball coach at Owens Community College for the past two seasons while teaching at Springfield High School in Holland, Ohio. He helped the Owens Express to two OCCAC championships and a Region 12 championship in 1999-2000. Before Owens, Whitmire was head baseball coach at Otsego High School for three years, leading the team to a 48-26 record during that span, including a 34-14 league mark. Whitmire is president of the Northwest Ohio Amateur Baseball League and the Northwest Ohio Director of USSSA Baseball. This summer, he is head coach of the Bowling Green Titus Reality 16-year-old baseball team which recently advanced to the National Baseball Congress World Series in Brainerd, Minn. Whitmire resides in Maumee and is currently pursuing his master's degree in education at BGSU. Whitmire is BGSU's second assistant and will work with Falcon outfielders.
"He's an outstanding young coach who has helped to turn Owens into a junior college powerhouse over the last two years," Schmitz said about Whitmire. "He will bring a lot of everything to the team."
