Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball program has added a pair of assistant coaches, director of athletics Paul Krebs and head coach Curt Miller have announced. Jennifer Roos and Brandi Poole have joined Miller's first BGSU staff.
"Jennifer is a steal for myself on the coaching staff," said Miller, who was hired on May 8. "Brandi is an up-and-coming young coach who I believe has a huge future in the game of basketball. Both coaches are great additions to the BGSU program."
Roos comes to the Falcon program after spending eight years at Davidson College. She became a coach with the Wildcats upon her graduation from the school.
Roos served as the recruiting coordinator for the last two seasons, the scheduling coordinator for the last five years and the scouting coordinator during all eight years at Davidson.
"I chose BGSU for several reasons, first and foremost the opportunity to work with Curt," said Roos. "His reputation in the coaching ranks is unprecedented, and his ties with other college coaches and high school coaches are nationwide. His level of commitment towards his players, his previous programs and his desire for community involvement are very genuine and that seems to be a rarity at the Division I level now more than the norm.
"Also, after speaking with many people about BGSU, I was very pleased to hear about the sense of pride that everyone expressed from alums to even former community members. I know with the backing of the administration and the community already in place, it will be very rewarding for everyone to have the women's basketball program return to prominence in the MAC academically and athletically."
Roos, a native of Louisville, Ky., was a member of both the 1991-92 Davidson club team and the 1992-93 varsity squad. The latter season marked the varsity program's first after a six-year absence.
During that 1992-93 season, Roos was the sole upperclassman among the team's starting five. She led DC in minutes, steals and assists, and was one of only two players to start all 22 games.
Roos was a standout in field hockey during her undergraduate years. She was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time MVP for Davidson. Roos led the 'Cats to a 50-15-6 record in her four seasons, and helped the squad to three consecutive Deep South Association championships.
Roos served as a captain for both the field hockey and basketball teams as a senior. She also lettered in lacrosse at Davidson.
Roos graduated from Davidson in 1993, with a B.A. in history, upon which she began her coaching career at the school.
"Jennifer is an eight-year Division-I assistant coaching veteran," said Miller. "She is well respected and has a great reputation in the coaching fraternity as a national recruiter. She has helped Davidson assemble nationally-ranked recruiting classes and has raised the level of that program.
"Jennifer will bring great experience and enthusiasm to our program. She will be coaching the guards, and will be acting as my recruiting coordinator. I look forward to her bringing us some of her Southern contacts. And, obviously, her national recruiting contacts will be a huge plus for the Bowling Green program."
Poole brings a wealth of experience, from both the collegiate and professional ranks, to the BGSU staff. A native of Clarksville, Tenn., she joins the Brown and Orange after spending the 2000-01 season as an assistant coach at West Virginia University.
"I am very excited about being at Bowling Green," said Poole. "The program has such a strong tradition of winning, and the opportunity to work for Curt is incredible. Also, the community support seems tremendous.
"I am honored to be here, and excited to work with Curt and Jennifer. I want us to get back to postseason play."
Prior to her stint in Morgantown, Poole served as the director of basketball operations for the Portland Fire of the WNBA. She also coached at the Fire's 2000 Tryout Camp along with assisting in practice and game coaching strategies and decisions. Her resum also includes 16 months as an assistant coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Poole also worked with the Colorado Xplosion of the now-defunct ABL, serving as both a season ticket account executive and the team's director of group sales.
Poole is a 1997 graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., where she earned a B.S. in mathematics. Poole received a Master's degree in business administration from West Virginia Wesleyan in 2000.
On the court, Poole was a three-time all-conference performer and three-year co-captain at the University of the South. She still ranks sixth on the school's scoring list and third on the rebounding chart.
"Brandi Poole has a huge future in the coaching ranks," said Miller. "She has a tremendous personality and is going to be a top recruiter. She will coach the post players for us. Her youth and enthusiasm is a great bonus for our program."
Miller and his staff inherit a total of 11 letterwinners, including three starters, from the 2000-01 Falcon team. That squad went 11-18 overall and 6-10 in Mid-American Conference play.
