Bowling Green - Bowling Green State University ice hockey coach Buddy Powers announced today the hiring of Tim Alexander as assistant coach. Alexander completes a staff that already includes Powers and first assistant Dave Smith.
Alexander has been the general manager and head coach of the Cleveland Barons Hockey Club (Junior A) since 1993. He was twice named the North American Hockey League Coach of the Year and has had five players drafted in the NHL and 67 go onto collegiate hockey. His record with the Barons was 235-195-22, while spending time on the Board of Governors in the NAHL as well as being a member of the Budget and Selection Committee.
In addition, Alexander was director and founder of the Cleveland Barons AAA Youth Program in 1994, which currently has seven youth teams with over 130 boys participating, served as head coach of the Cleveland North Coast Barons, a member of the NAJHL Junior B League, from 1992-93, and was an assistant coach at St. Edward High School from 1990-92, helping the team capture the 1992 Ohio State High School Championship.
Alexander is a 1980 graduate of Bowling Green, earning a bachelor of science degree in business education with a minor in athletic coaching. The Windsor, Ontario, native earned four letters on the ice under coaches Ron Mason and Jerry York during his time as a Falcon. In the four years that Alexander played for the Falcons, the team captured three Central Collegiate Hockey Association Championships and earned three NCAA Tournament bids.
"Tim brings the same things to coaching as he did as a player," Powers said. "He was a hard worker who did the little things to succeed. He has a good background towards recruiting. He's got a great, outgoing personality. One of the things you want in a recruiter is someone who can bring some talented players our way."
As for Alexander, he's happy to be back with the Brown and Orange.
"I think after being in coaching for 19 years, it's a dream come true to come back to my alma mater," Alexander said. "I'm looking forward to working with Buddy (Powers). I think he is a good coach. Where I can help right away is in recruiting. The kids I've recruited over the last eight years are the same ones that colleges have recruited, so I think I can step in right away."
Alexander will be involved in all facets of the BGSU program with an emphasis in recruiting. He and his wife, Sandy, have one son, Jarrett.
