KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Jessica Pattison's goal late in the first half proved to be all the scoring Western Michigan University would need, as the Broncos recorded a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the WMU Soccer Complex.
With the victory, the first-place Broncos improve to 6-3-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MAC. The Falcons drop to 4-3-2 and 1-2-1, respectively.
Pattison's goal came late in the first half, as her shot beat BGSU junior goalkeeper Erika Flanders with 2:13 left in the stanza. For Pattison, a sophomore, the goal was her second of the year. Junior Mary Gignac drew the lone assist.
WMU senior goalie Megan Ramey was forced to make just two saves in earning the shutout. It marked the first time in nine matches this season that the Falcons did not score at least one goal.
The Broncos held a 12-4 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Flanders made five saves in the contest.
The Broncos led in corner kicks, 6-3, and committed 13 fouls to the Falcons' seven.
"Obviously, we're disappointed with the result," said BGSU coach Andy Richards. "However, I thought that our team did a tremendous job of playing against a tough team that's currently at the top of the MAC.
"We played to our game plan very well. We played with a lot of enthusiasm, intensity and hard work, and a lot of intelligence, too. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
"When we had chances today, we didn't finish with enough quality. We didn't have enough composure around the box, and those elements are key.
"We're disappointed, of course, although I am pleased with the overall performance of the team. We look forward to returning home and trying to get on the winning track again."
BGSU returns home to begin a five-match homestand. The Falcons will step outside of MAC action with a Wednesday (Oct. 3) match vs. Youngstown State University. That contest will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Cochrane Field. Then, the Brown and Orange will entertain the University of Akron in a Friday (Oct. 5) contest, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
