McLeod Named MAC Player of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's Keith McLeod (East Division) and Ball State's Theron Smith (West Division) were selected as winners of the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week award for the ninth week of the 2001-02 season (games of Jan. 7-Jan. 13).
MAC East Division Player of the Week
Bowling Green's Keith McLeod (6-2, Sr., G,, Canton, Ohio) averaged 28.5 points per game as the Falcons captured wins over Northern Illinois and Buffalo to move into sole possession of first place in the East Division with a 3-0 league mark. McLeod scored 42 points Saturday against the Bulls in an 85-73 win to become the first BG player since Howard Komives in 1964 to score that many points in a game. On Tuesday he scored 15 points in a 91-61 triumph over Northern Illinois. McLeod, in winning his third player of the week honor this season, shot 45.7% (16-of-35) from the field, 44.4% (8-of-18) from three-point range and 94.4% (17-of-18) from the free throw line in the two games.
MAC West Division Player of the Week
Ball State's Theron Smith (6-8, Jr., F, Auburndale, Fla.) averaged 17.5 points and 14.5 rebounds as the Cardinals defeated Central Michigan, 89-77, and Toledo, 68-59, to claim first place in the West Division. Smith had 15 points and 15 rebounds against CMU and followed with 20 points and 14 rebounds at Toledo. For the week, Smith made 45.5% (10- of-22) from the field and 70.5% (12-of-17) from the line. His two double-doubles upped his leage leading total in that category to nine. Smith added five assists, two blcoks and three steals in the two games. For Smith it marked his second player of the week honor this season and sixth of his career.

Ben Reed, Western Michigan, Fr. G (22.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg with a high of 30 points and eight rebounds versus Central Michigan).
East Division
Louis Campbell, Buffalo, Sr., G (18 points in each game versus Kent State and Bowling Green. Scored game winner with 0.9 sec-onds left in 66-65 win over KSU).
Antonio Gates, Kent State, Jr., F (18.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg as KSU went 1-1, career high 25 points at Buafflo).
Tamar Slay, Marshall, Sr., G (16.0 ppg for the 1-1 Herd with a high of 27 points versus Eastern Michigan).
Juby Johnson, Miami, So., F (17.5 ppg as the RedHawks went 2- 0. Has a high of 26 points versus Marshall).
Brandon Hunter, Ohio, Jr., F (22.0 ppg, 12.5 rpg, high of 27 points versus Western Michigan, 61.9% FG pct.).
