BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
HEAD COACH CURT MILLER:
"I'm very proud of the kids, we didn't quit. With 2:14 remaining, down by nine, and with a 3-10 record, it's a real positive sign that we didn't quit. We made one more comeback and had a possession to tie it or possibly take the lead. I'm pleased that a team that hasn't had a lot of success didn't quit."
"We executed our defensive game plan again. Jennifer Youngblood and Jessica Shattuck are two legitimate post players in this league, and we felt that they would come into this game and pound it at us. We wanted to take them out of the game and make other people beat us, so we played a lot of zone, some sagging man-to-man, and refused to allow those two to beat us. They had 15 points between the two of them, so I feel like we accomplished what we wanted to do."
"(NIU coach) Carol Hammerle has won something like 492 [EDITOR'S NOTE: He's exactly right] more games than I have. I have a tremendous amount of respect for her coaching ability, especially her defense. We knew it was going to be low-scoring, we needed to get some more transition points and some offensive putbacks. But, as much respect I have for her defensively, we surprisingly got a ton of layups and easy shots that we did not make. I'm disheartened that we did not make shots when I felt we got good looks -- better looks than I thought we'd get against Northern Illinois. Our four post players went just 4-for-22, and those were predominately inside shots. You can't go 4-for-22 and expect success."
"I'm very pleased to see Kim Griech play the way we think she's capable of playing night-in and night-out. She told us she was going to have a good game, she had a positive attitude coming into the game, and it was nice to see her play that way."
"(The game) is one that slipped by. Both teams did not play well. We are in such a need to win an ugly game like this. We got the ugly game that we wanted, but we were just uglier."
(On Francine Miller:) "I think, now that the decision has been made (to apply for a medical hardship), she's excited about the chance to come back and play another year, once she recovers from her injury. I'm excited about the possibility of her coming back to the program and being a real go-to player. This year, a lot of kids are now going to have to step up and play without her. We're going to gain so much experience from players who may not have gotten as many minutes behind Francine. In the long run, even though it may be a struggle this year, her medical hardship -- if it is approved -- could jump-start the program in a big way."
