MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team got a pair of second-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over host Central Michigan University Friday afternoon (Oct. 11). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the CMU Soccer Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in MAC play. The Chippewas fall to 4-5-3 and 3-3-2, respectively.
After a scoreless first half, the Falcons got on the board right away in the second stanza. Freshman Samantha Meister, at the top of the penalty area on the left side, slotted the ball through two CMU defenders to Kristy Coppes. The sophomore placed the ball past CMU goalkeeper Kari Alexander with just 22 seconds elapsed in the half.
Meister, who drew the lone assist on the Coppes goal, doubled the BGSU lead at the 78:37 mark. She took a Katie Piening throw-in and blasted a long shot from the right side into the upper left corner of the net.
At the other end of the field, senior Erika Flanders stymied every Chippewa threat to earn the shutout. Flanders made a total of five saves in the match.
"We had another good performance today," said BGSU coach Andy Richards. "Some years, it feels like you win some games you don't deserve to win, or you lose some games that you don't deserve to lose.
"This year, though, I feel like we have had fair results in all of our MAC games. We have five MAC wins now, and we have deserved the victory in all five. In our three losses, we either didn't play well or we didn't take our chances when the opportunity arose.
"We did a tremendous job today. Kristy scored a nice goal, and Sam (Meister) got the assist, and then hit an absolute cracker for a goal of her own.
"Janice Mentrup had a similar goal in our win here two years ago. Sam's may not have been hit quite as hard, but it was of equal caliber in terms of quality.
"It was nice to see Erika get another shutout, and it was good to see Katie Piening come on and get an assist. Really, everyone did a good job today.
"We are playing very well right now. We have been very consistent, and we are taking our chances. We did a pretty good job of attacking the ball this afternoon. Now, if we can just find a way to do the little, special things, maybe we can knock off one of the big dogs down th road."
The Falcons will return to action with a Sunday (Oct. 13) match at Eastern Michigan. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
