Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State netted a goal just 24 seconds into the game against Bowling Green and never looked back, going on to post a 10-1 victory over the visiting Falcons at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich., on Friday night.
The Bulldogs' Derek Nesbitt scored his first goal of the season at just :24 seconds for a 1-0 FSU lead. The home team netted another goal, this time by Jeremy Scherlinck at 6:07, for a 2-0 advantage.
Just over a minute later, though, BGSU freshman Mike Falk shot a wrister from the right circle that found its way into and out of FSU goalie Mike Brown's glove to cut the deficit to 2-1. Falk's goal, his first of the season, came at 7:30 in the first period. Brian Escobedo assisted on the goal.
FSU added another tally before the end of the first period at 17:47 to push its lead to 3-1. The goal came from senior Chris Kunitz, the first of two on the night for the winger.
The Bulldogs (2-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 CCHA) netted three more goals in the second period and four in the final 20 minutes of action for the 10-1 victory.
"It was evident from the start that Ferris was the quicker team tonight," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "For 60 minutes they were the better hockey team. They do a good job of shooting the puck from a lot of different areas. They put a lot of shots on net and were able to capitalize. They moved the puck extremely well and generated a lot of offense."
"When they went down and scored on the 2-on-1, that was kind of the turning point," Paluch said, referring to the Jeff Legue goal at 7:55 of the second period which pushed the Bulldog lead to 4-1.
FSU outshot the Falcons 43-33, holding the biggest advantage in the first period (16-10). Brown finished with 32 saves on 33 shots while Tyler Masters had 33 saves in 60 minutes of action.
BGSU was 0-for-2 on the power play while FSU was 1-for-4. It was just BGSU's third PPG allowed in five games this season.
The Falcons (1-4-0 overall, 0-3-0 CCHA) face the Bulldogs again on Saturday, Oct. 19, in Big Rapids, Mich. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
